I have 300,000 on my 91 and I am working on the 4th e4od. I like it it just does not last as long. Try a shift kit and a big tranny cooler when you rebuild it
I had the very common torque converter clutch slippage problem. The whole thing needed rebuilding at 112,000 miles. This so-called heavy duty transmission did not last in a 302-powered F-150. My transmission shop sees them die as early as 75,000 miles in diesels.
Early E4OD, before 95, had problems with the torque converter and early failure especially on diesels. The newer ones are better and have a redesigned TC and uprated components, so I am told.
The tranny shop that did mine said to change fluid every 12K miles, mostly so you have the opportunity to inspect the contents of the pan. With the heavy duty TC and shift kit and improved pump the shop told me it should be bullet proof for my towing application, 8K at least 50% of the miles.
I killed my tranny by towing with low fluid level. It started TC shudder and smelled brunt at about 50K, also had intermittant harsh shifting. All classical symptoms of TC shudder induced failure. The miles was unusual according to the shop but was caused by my stupidity. I have killed 2 trannies due to stoopidity in over 30 years. I also have had 2 die from inadequate maintenance, ie should have changed more often than the manual recommended. One of those, a chebby, died without warning at almost 100K and it was maintained at half the mileage recommended. Teh shop said I might have caught that if I did changes at 12K.
My experience is that trannies typically last about 100K miles. Some lucky ones will last a lot longer and some will be shorter, usual bell curve I guess.
So yes, my 94 E4OD died at 50K due partially to low fluid(bad maintenance) and due to known problems with early models.
yeah, I just had mine rebuilt by Aamoco. I told them to make it bullteproof, so they used straight gears instead of angled? It shifts really smooth now, but is very loud. Had 92,000 on when it was rebuilt.
