8.8 Diff. swap without resetting gears?

I gotta do something about this open rear....but I'm not ready to set up ring and pinion gears...

Since I'll be reusing the gears, do they even need to be reset after removing the carrier and ring gear?

OR, is there such a thing as a [decent] lim. slip/locker that does not require removing the r & p?

Thanks!

Check out the Powertrax drop-in locker. It installs in your standard carrier without pulling it apart. $419.95 from Summit.

On your other question, if you reuse the stock ring and pinion there's no need to pull the pinion out to change to a Trac-Lok carrier, so the setup would be greatly simplified. You would still need to check backlask and contact pattern and adjust the SIDE shims accordingly. If you're re-installing a used R&P, it is critically important for gear life that you get a backlash measurement before you start and that you re-install the ring to the exact same lash.

Question

Thanks. Alright, I guess I need to learn more about how everything goes together, etc. I'm just tying to keep things as simple as possible.

Ooohhhh.....Are the main bearing caps what locate the ring gear/carrier = backlash? Correct me if I'm wrong here....then there's your pinion depth and side shims. Adjusting the pinion depth and ring gear together gives your correct contact pattern. I guess I'm still not sure what side shims need to accomplish.

So basically, will I need to just set the backlash back to where it was prior to removing anything, check the pattern to be sure it's correct, and side shim it no matter which diff/carrier is used? I thought there were some that didn't require the complete removal.

The Powertrax does not require that you remove the carrier. No checking backlash, no shimming, nothing. Assemble in place and button it back up.

Backlash is determined by a combination of the pinion depth and side shims. When you re-use the same R&P in the same housing, the geometry of the gears will remain the same which means you will not have to re-set pinion depth. Because of manufacturing differences in the 2 carriers, you will probably have to re-shim the sides to arrive at the same backlash. All you will have to do after you re-shim the carrier sides to the same backlash setting as you previously is to increase the shims for the required pre-load, torque everything down and button it up.

I guess that helps explain the buku pricetag of $420. I suppose that offsets the cost of having gears reset.

Powetraxx actually has 2 lockers that will work.
The lock right at ~$250 and the No-Slip at ~$450.
Detroit has the EZ-Locker for about $270. I was told this morning in an email from the U.S. distrubutor of the Ausie Locker that one will be available for the 8.8 in about 3 months. There is an Ausie Locker currently available for the Dana 44 for $199. I don't know how much the 8.8 version will be. All of these install without removing the ring & pinion.

OK, that's cool.

Does anyone have experience with the LockRight or EZ-Locker?
