Originally posted by 90ebbronc Is there any way to build a 4 cylinder (say in a mustang or older ranger) that will either hang with or scare the crap out of a v8. What would it take to build a 4 cylinder to run in the 8s in an 1/8 mile without nos.
You are going to want to build a turbo 2.3. Parts are plentiful and cheap and you can easily reach 270rwhp with all stock parts. Oh, you don't need anywhere near 400hp to run 8.0's, I would be pissed if my car did that.

make anywhere near as much, so you'll
loose, no matter what...
Uh huh, . We have an 86 coupe that could refute that.

Who said "as any V8"? I believe you said any I4 would "loose" to any V8. It isn't magic, and yeah, the turbo makes quite a bit of torque, alot in the low end.
Jimbo302, What all have you done to your '86? I would like to know because my '89 2.3 could benifit greatly from a turbo!
Could a person pull the intake, exhaust, turbo, and ECM from one of these turbo cars and install it on a non-turbo four? What about oil supply and return lines? Is the conprestion ratio different between the turbo and non-turbo 2.3? I would think yes but I don't know. Would it be better to find a complete turbo engine?
What year turbo cars do I need to look for? '84-5 thur '89or'90?
I know that I have a bunch of questions but what ever info you could give me would be great!!! Thanks
69, turbo four stuff is still pretty cheap in the junkyards, so a little scavenging saves a lot of money. Your best bet is to go with a complete 2.3 from, say a turbocoupe thunderbird (mid-late eighties). They seem to be easier finds.
The 86 is a joint project between my cousin and I. It is pure junkyard and super cheap. The shell was already sitting around, so we got an 86 turbocoupe block (the comp ratio is lower and the pistons are forged), a 79 or so pinto oval port head, ported cleaned up with a roller follower camshaft from a ranger.
The kicker is the old school draw through intake from a 79 turbo pace car. It has a .63 trim t3 and a 38mm weber on top. Then there is a little fogger system plumbed into it as well.
Currently it is pretty interesting with a T5, but the turbo alone blows the clutch out pretty quick (it pushes 11psi with no adjustment), so we are contemplating going with an auto.
A full efi motor would be very nice swap for your 89, Good luck with it.
Built, what did u do to it? That sounds pretty sweet and cheap on gas, lol.
Oh btw, i found a "5.0" mustang here for sale. Does 6.5s in an 1/8 mile at 109 mph. But the deal is, its a 347 stroker now instead of the 302 . He wants 3500 cash for it, it has wide street slicks on back and itty bitty skinny napop (sp) tires on the front. 3 inch cowl induction hood and tach on the hood as well. I doubt ill buy it as it wont be to much of a race around here, be to easy for me, lol.
Easily once we get a clutch to hold or go with an auto. Its a fox body that weighs less than 3k, with 4.56 gears and 26" 8" et's. Have you never been to a race track? 1.60's wouldn't impress me one bit with this thing. If it doesn't launch better than sevens on the fogger, something broke. My bolt on 5.0 gt did that waaay back when. This is much lighter, much much more powerful, and the suspension is more apt for launching.
Here, check out this car with a very similar setup to ours, this car has gone 6.3's on 1.3 short times. Same draw through setup with a fogger.Click here for pic

So what are you doing to get boost at the line??
As for the "Have I ever been to the Race track"
question, Back in the early 70's, I raced at Cayuga
in Ontario, Canada. A '72 LTD with a 400 my Brother
and I built...
The last time I was at the track was October, I snuffed
a 2.3L Turbo'd Mustang, with the Rockettes Capri...
