Good or bad?

I found this thing. The body is rough, but the truck is solid overall.
My grandpa seems to think it will have issues and yes I know it’s old and will. But he seems to think it’ll give me a significant amount of issues all the time, and that it’s a bad buy.
I figure it would be no different from my 88, give it what it needs and it’ll run good for a long time, then have another issue, maybe 2 or 3 times a year. if not more reliable because of the work he’s done.

It’s got new steering components, shocks, and transmission (15k miles on that). It’s got 208k miles total, and it needs an HPOP, and AC recharge. I can tell it’ll need tires as well It does not leak it is RWD.
He’s asking $4500, I would try to get it for less.

I do see some superduty 7.3s 2 specifically, for $5,000, running that I’m interested in, but I do like the OBS look better.
I know the OBS isn’t as good of a truck in terms of strength, towing, and efficiency. But I don’t tow yet, the trucks more so for me to toy around with to learn how to work on a diesel. I’m sure some of you saw a previous post of mine about an overheated truck for $1k as you can tell I didn’t go for it.
Overall what do y’all think, is it worth going to look at?

Here’s one of the other trucks I wanted as a comparison:

It’s overall in better shape for $5,000. It runs, but unknown about things like the tranny, and suspension. It seems this one is being sold by a tow company or something.
This one has 210k miles. But it’ll be harder to work on.
This still will be my daily driver as I’ll probably start a big project on my 88 F-150 once I know the 7.3 will run good.
I want the OBS, as I’ll try to get it for low to mid 3s. And then do the HPOP, AC repair, then fix the interior trim. The power locks and windows do work on the OBS.

If you like old style Ford why not wait for a nice 5.8 or 460? Or a Bronco? Cheaper to keep. Awesome to own. Is there a reason it has to be diesel? Those aren't crazy prices but a diesel needs frequent brakes jobs. The tires have to be 10 ply. They take a bucket of oil per change. I loved my 7.3 but in the new traded it for a 78 Bronco. Don't want to deal with diesel. But if you tow. They're great.

Not great, not good, not bad, both are probably over priced.
I can't say for the super duty, other than I do not like 1998-2008 trucks, not my thing.

The OBS has had lots done, looks like the tranny is clean, meaning it was out, has aftermarket parts all over it, someone loved it.
Why are they selling it?
In my area, a minty stock truck like that advertises for 10-15,000+, way over priced.

Ones that have after market parts on it like that could be that previous owner has beat the heck out of it, and continues to do so it can handle it.

Personally, I like finding cheaper, unmolested, completely bone stock trucks that have had regular maintenance done.
Then make it you. They are harder to find, but worth the wait when you find it.

You call that OBS body rough? Yeah, the tailgate is beat, but otherwise it doesn't look bad at all in the pics. Looks like it had either a Fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch in it at one time. If you want rough, come here to the Rustbelt, where at 200k miles that body would have rot holes you could throw a herd of cats through!
The 7.3 Powerstroke is just about bulletproof, at least compared to the later 6.0 and 6.4. Those abominations I wouldn't touch with a ten-meter cattleprod!

I wanted the diesel because I wanted to use it so I could learn to work on diesels. I already have a 302 so if the diesel costs to much for daily driving I’ll drive that instead.

Its being sold because the HPOP went bad.

The body is rust free, I just meant compared to the other trucks I saw. But my OBS has dents to, I don’t mind the dents they’re all still fixable.

If I go for the red one, is the HPOP from the super duty just plug and play? I hear some people swap them, but I also hear you need to swap the reservoir as well?
I see a lot of people say get the Dieselsite Adrenaline pump? But would it be better to just go Bosch or Delphi? For $400 less.

Just get the OBS and fix what needs fixing when it needs fixing. You have a 2nd vehicle so if it goes down you don't need to bum a ride to work to pay for the parts to fix it.

i would pass on the OBS. "just needs a HPOP"
since it does not run, you are taking his word that that is all that is wrong. it may just have a blown engine, and he is selling it "just needing a HPOP" because he knows there is more to it than that.

It's a 9th gen F-Series Ford truck. That = good right there. They're all good and worth fixing imo. They're all old classic trucks now. No longer being made. Once they're gone, they're gone. I don't think any of them that haven't met the crusher yet, are worth turning you back on.
Tom's right, it could need an engine. Who puts that kind of $ into something, and then stops because it needs a single engine fix?

That said, his asking price for the whole truck might be less than he just payed someone to reman that trans (Ask. I bet he has the papers, that is, if he doesn't just volunteer to show them). Just let that sink in for a minute. Would you buy a reman diesel E4OD, if it also came with a free truck to fix up? If so, there's a good rust free one, well worthy of fixing up imo. No rust, just some dented up easily replaceable sheet metal and some interior work. Just imagine if you could talk the price down even more!

The OBS does not run?
Oh, well, that makes it a $500 parts truck, maybe $1000 if its got really good parts.
What if you buy this HPOP thingy and it still doesn't run?

this here is exactly how you need to look at it.

However, you could get a one gallon weed sprayer and fill it with diesel. Pump it up and spray in the intake tube and see if it runs while you spray in the tube. You will have to play with the sprayer to keep rpms reasonably low. But, if it does run for a while it may be the hpop. It could also be the lift pump in the tank is bad and not supplying fuel to the hpop.
