Hello all, I have a 13 super duty with def. I’ve owned it about a year and a half. I got the warning of 500 miles more for def. I put in 2 1/2 gallons and it was full. Fast-forward several months the deaf warning came on again so this time I let it get down to 100 miles to go. The problem I have is I put in 2 1/2 gallons and it came out full. I’m wondering if there’s an issue with the leveling gauge or whatever’s inside. I see hot shot secret came out with a new solution to put in the def tank to dissolve any deposits there may be, has anyone had this issue or used the hotshot secret product?
thnx
There is a known issue with the def heater/sender assembly on some 13-16 trucks. Ford did a warranty extension for it, but it expires at 11 years or 120,000 miles, so it would appear that your 13 truck is no longer covered. Might be worth contacting a dealer just to see if there's anything Ford would do for you.
I have also heard that the sender can get confused if you top off the def tank before it gives you the low def warning. Not sure if that applies in your case.
There has been threads on this very subject in the 6.7 section for the 11 to 16 trucks. Mine never had a problem with me filling it up prior to it going into the "500 mile" warning but some were not so lucky.
I just replaced my DEF pump and sending unit. My Tank was empty when I pulled it. I had a P20E8 code for low reductant pressure. It never put my truck in limp mode and I drove for a few months before I dropped the tank and replaced the pump and sending unit.
I only added what was left of a jug I had in my basement so it was about 1.5 to 1.75 gal. I did not want to fill the tank in case I had to drop tank again for any issues. I also did not install the tank skid plate but will soon.
Anyways... I am waiting for the 500 mile limit warning myself. Then i will use the two jugs I have left and fill up before winter here in WNY.
Try doing a search under the forum search function in the 6.7 section.

I'm on my phone now... I'll go on my laptop and see if I can find anything for you... in the 6.7 section.
Thank you guys for the replies. I’m going to order the hit shot secret additive n give it a shot. I’ll also go to the 6.7 section to see what I can find.

When the sending unit fails, it does put the truck into a power derate mode. That happened to me and my sending unit was replaced at under 50k miles under the extended warranty I had.

thank you for recall info. I only have 79k miles on it. One year over their limit. But I’m gonna call ford n c if they’ll do something. It’s parked most of the time, I’m hoping this hot shot secrets will help IF the issue is with def crystallizing n affecting the sending unit. It’s says it helps with a lot if issues. I use their oil n fuel treatments n I am happy with their products.

That was not me. It was @Wellibe who posted that... I'm thinking that it the fact it sits a lot may have something to do with you having issues... possibly.
There's also this stuff as well But have not ever used it. I see it sold at Advance Auto:
You may have crystals forming on the sending unit which is affecting how it reads the DEF level in the tank.
Prior to me changing the pump and the sending unit, I started using the Platinum DEF, which I'd believe has an additive like this in it, so maybe after my two tanks of the Platinum are in my DEF tank before winter, I'll just buy Wally World regular DEF buy some of that additive as a maintenance for the DEF injector itself. I run my truck everyday and gets fully hot. I monitor PIDs (parameter IDs which are data from the ECM like EGTs (exhaust gas temps, regen status, primary fuel pressure and other stuff), so I complete about every regen. I'd just like to be on the proactive side and keep the DEF system rolling and working.
Good luck with the Hot Shots stuff. I will have to look into that as well.
Just found this on Hot Shot's website.

I have to admit, I like the Hot Shots DEF additive better than the other stuff. I checked out the SDS and it looks like the Hot Shot stuff is concentrated as it contains only two ingredients where as the Rislone stuff is three ingredients but not at 100% composition, so that tells me there is probably water mixed in there, I would think...
I also like how the Hot Shot additive lowers the freezing temp of DEF 20 degrees.

my 16 occasionally does not recognize being filled with DEF/does not reset. I have had luck disconnecting the batteries and letting it sit while I was at work. after being reconnected it will detect the fill and work as expected for a while

I don't have a DEF issue. But just a question.
I have been using DEF Platinum.
Would it hurt to put a DEF additive in the tank for extra cleaning?
I started using the Platinum last year IIRC. After my recent replacement of the DEF pump and sending unit, I just put the remaining DEF that was left in an open jug, about 1.5 gallons or so. I'm going to wait for it to get to the 500 mile limit and then fill up for winter with the two jugs I have in the basement. I ordered a bottle of the Hot Shots stuff from Amazon and will dose it two ozs. They call for 1 oz per 2.5 gal of DEF. I figure it can't hurt using it during the cold weather as it lowers the DEF freezing temp 20 degrees.
