Does anyone know if it's possible to select 4X4, have the light go on steady, and still not be in 4X4. I just bought a 1998 XLT & even though the tires aren't the greatest, there's still some tread & I'd think the truck should be better in the snow than this. I fish tail on slight grades & have difficulty with slight snow banks. When I select 4X4, I don't hear the engagement like I could with my 93 Bronco. I just sold her last week when I picked the Expy. I plan on putting on some Revo's later this week which I'm sure will help. The problem is that I'm solo out in the snow & can't drive & see the tires at the same time. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
I really don't hear anything in 4H, I do hear it in 4L. Mine handles great with factory (I think) tires - 1998 EB. bad tires can make a huge difference. Here's an easy way to tell - Find a spot where you don't get much traction - turn the wheel all the way, let out the brake slowly. If it has trouble moving, and the back end wants to rotate rather than move around the turn, chances are your 4x4 is not working. If it turns as you would expect, it's working.
Your 4x4 is definately not engaged. It sounds like you got a bad shift motor on the transfer case. The easiest way to tell if it's engaged is to pull onto a road that you have plenty of room on , come to a complete stop and hit the gas! If it is engaged, you will feel the front end slide sideways a bit. If it's not your rear tires will just sit there and spin. These vehicles are like tanks in the snow. Last winter I couldn't even get mine to spin! Great traction in snow and even had pretty good traction on all this NC ice that we get. I had absolutely no problems!
Thanks for the replies. My guess is that something's up with the 4X4 system. I just thought the 4X4 light had some diagnostic properties that would not allow it to illuminate if the system was not completely engaged. I'm bringing it in Friday to get checked out since I have no desire to lay down in the 2 feet of snow we got here in MA this weekend. Hopefully, all will be well & the Revos will be installed by Saturday. Last weekend's spin outs were embarassing & really made me miss my Bronco.
Just got the truck out of the shop. It was cracked vacum lines. Revos are now installed & it's confirmed...These things are tanks in the snow. I was just driving around in the back yard w/ no problems. Also, thanks for all for the info on the Revos. They do look great on the truck.
