In my project of converting a Ford F-250 from 1973 into a thirties racer I encountered my first real drawback! Until now everything went smooth, but today I found out that the diff of the Dana 60 axle is welded together. I will drive it on the road only, so this is no good for me. What should i do? I have two options:
1. Get myself new spider gears. I saw that they are available (around $ 100) and some do ship to The Netherlands. But I'm not a skilled mechanic..
2. Get myself another Dana 60 axle. Hard to get in NL.
New spiders are gonna be the cheapest route. But getting the old welded gears out could be difficult, unless you've got a cutting torch. New carrier & spiders may be the easiest option, but then a setup is needed.
To bad its not a Dana 70, I've got a complete carrier you could have.
That's unfortunate. Even more so, since I am about to pull a dana 60 from my truck that you could have.
Thnx man! If I lived near to you I would thankfully accept your generous offer, but shipping it to The Netherlands would make it make it the most expensive old Dana 60 axle ever
Welded spider gears, AKA a "Lincoln Locker". I think that you'll be able to get it apart without destroying your differential carrier with some careful cutting and a new set of spider gears.
