It is good on them to let them warm up, 30 minutes is fine. When it is cold it will kick the idle rpm's up so it is idling at a safe speed. YOu should also let it idle for 5-10 minutes after driving to let the turbo cool down.
Extended idling is more than 10 minutes. If the EGT is less than 275*F wet stacking will occur as well as fuel contamination in the oil. I've seen fully warmed up diesels idling and lose tempurature all the way down to the "C" on the gauge.
The best way to warm up a diesel is to drive it. Mine will never even get up to cold idling in my driveway. I usually let it warm for a minute or so, at least until the voltmeter tells me the glow plugs are off. I tend to try and keep the RPM's below 1700-1800 until it is warmed up, and don't drive at highway speeds until warm. This is a much better way to warm up a diesel than letting it idle for 30 minutes. It's my understanding that fuel can get into the oil if you do this.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Dec-02 AT 09:12 PM (EST)]When i worked on land drilling rigs, our ford truck was our home literally, only place to sleep etc and have idled them for 8-10 hrs at time.i am sure it wasnt good for them, but we had no choice and really did not see any adverse effects.we did for years with gas {351] engines, then around 1993 they switched to PSD's.i have burned a full tank of fuel idling in both gas and diesels.we actually tried ch##y trucks and they would not last 30000 miles.we got a new truck @150000 miles.this only confirmed what i already new about ford trucks-the best
