Coolant level?

Installed new aluminum rad. When I pulled the old rad i also pulled the block plugs and did a flush but truck has only taken 4 gallons back in it. Why won't it pick up the rest of the coolant? Air? Should it burp itself or is there a process to burp? If thermostat was stuck closed wouldn't i have overheated by now? Any help is appreciated.

Pull heater hose off the motor, that should let most of the air out of the system. Had to do that on a DT466 the other day. On that application there were shut off valves on motor. After I got the air out of the motor while the hose was still off and with the valve closed I put the pressure test on the radiator and pumped enough pressure to force the coolant through the heater system. On that application the heater is ten feet from the motor and about three feet higher than the radiator so it is a real pain to get the air out of the heater system otherwise. Once I had water coming back to the shut off valve I reinstalled the hose and opened up the valve. It would be nice if they would put a bleed valve in the systems to have a way to get rid of the air but that would cost money.

Thanks for the help do I just pull the heater hose and let it bleed with engine off or does it need to be running. Do i need to run the heat or anything any specifics would help. I also read in an older thread something about a plug on the water pump to bleed possibly?

That is all I did the other day. The air just needs a way out. If you have a radiator pressure tester you can use that to push the air out of the heater. If not just reconnect the hose and go for a drive once you have have the block full. Check the level after it cools down and top off.

Which radiator do you have? The wide one or the tall one. My wide radiator holds about 5 gallons and there is about 1 gallon that stay on the engine side.plus I put 1 gallon in my empty overflow recovery bottle. I do a double distilled flush on a coolant change. 5 gallons of DI per flush. Then I put in I gallon of concentrated and 4 gallons of 50/50 in the radiator and one gallon of 50/50 in the overflow recovery bottle. I also add a bottle of DCA to the radiator and one to the overflow recovery bottle.
