Other widow maker wheels

I read through the sticky tech threads but didn’t see anything on these other Firestone rims. They are an outside lock ring wheel but they seem to have very little engagement like the center split WM rims.
are these less dangerous because the tire bead is supported both sides by wheel barrel and has less chance of deflection and separation?
Does anyone have any info or opinions on these?

Those are not widow maker wheels and if in good condition, are safe to use IF HANDLED CORRECTLY.

More detail here. The posts by @truckdog62563 and the links he provides in this thread tell a full enough story about those wheels, and you'll be able to sleep soundly at night after reviewing them.

Yeah, those are uncommon wheels but look to be in good shape and should be able to stay in service. Stu

Thanks everyone! I think I have 4-6 of these. What are the distinct way to ID the Goodyear K28 widow makers? Is it the solid outer ring?

I think I need to do an inventory of all my rims.

This post shows the Goodyear K28. It is a demountable rim in this case. I'll try to find more as I thought there was one other that was a problem. This post has an illustration, the rest of the thread discusses various related subjects.

Thank you !

Out of my 42 rims I have.... I think 43....

11 WM

2 Firestone Diamond type with the solid lock ring.

The rest are a variety of single large lock ring and outer ring and snap ring.

This raises another aspect of multi-part wheel safety. Keeping base rims and rings together as matched sets can be vital to their safe use. Very few designs have I found where the manufacturers say it’s approved to interchange rings. Even different ring/rim widths within a similar design family can matter. OSHA has spelled this out to some degree in their chart and on their web site, but even they don’t go back to the very old wheel designs found on our older trucks.

As an example, I recently had a nice long discussion with a sale rep with the Wheels Now company in WI. They had a vendor booth set up at the ATHS show in Madison last month. One of their new display rims was a 20” x 6.5” Dayton demountable with a split locking side ring. I’ve been looking for a few narrow Daytons to complete a set. Visually to my old eye the new rim was a Goodyear LW design which I like. Not so he told me. These new rims are imported (of course) and while visually similar to the old Goodyear LW they do not interchange rings.

So for a fleet operator, or for just a guy with several old big trucks, it’s not safe to randomly substitute spare rings for damaged originals without verifying the design stampings on base rims and rings are a match. Here’ OSHA’s web site:

Here's that new rim that fooled me. Stu
