A Mercury Conversation

I took pics of this Merc two summers ago and forgot to share. I just want to generate a conversation(s) and in return be educated on the rims, box frame, motor, year, and anything else that is unique to this truck. Cheers, Rex

Looks to be a 1948 to 1950 M68 based on the wheel arch of the front fender.. That would mean it should have a 122” wheel base. Looks to have had a service bed of some kind. Somebody swapped axles I’d guess to get those silly four lug wheels to mount. Looks like a Merc cylinder head, but an earlier 59ab variety . Others can take their turns now. Stu

Probably either 85 or 100 horse power similar to the Ford versions of the 1940s. Safe bet the engine is junk given the missing radiator tubes. Stu

Somebody cobbled together a bunch of pieces to sell a "whole" truck.
Rims are what I buy for my wife's car for winter tires - aftermarket cheap rims.
As pointed out the engine is wrong.
The wheels being 4 bolt makes me think someone used a stock MII front suspension and probably the rear axle as well.
Most of the Mercury badging and trim has been stripped.
Looks to have a hydraulic lift bed.
Square ends on the tool box behind the seat and lack of stainless trim on window dividers is more like '50.

That looks like a really solid truck worthy of saving, if someone was so inclined. Too bad all the unique Merc trim has been robbed. If nothing else the cab could be used as a replacement for someone's rusty/rotted one.

I agree with Stu it appears to be a M-68. It also looks to have had a dump bed. The 4 lug wheels and axles look like something someone stuck under it to make it a roller. The C7RA-A engine was the early 239 Ford engine that was used in '48 up to serial number H48-20000, when the 8BA was introduced later in the year. My parts book says the Mercury engine had aluminum heads and were marked C7RA-B.

48-50's all looked alike and the only way to tell the difference is by looking at the serial number on the frame since the main tag in the center of the firewall is missing. The serial number is stamped right above the steering box on the frame rail. The early engine suggests it could be an early '48, but the tag in the corner possibly identifies it as a '50 so the engine may be a transplant. I'm convinced the GEE50 is part of a production code, but I have not found any documentation to decode it. The number portion seems consistent with other tags that have that as the year of the truck. Mine says FBBP, with the P being the year code for '52. Year codes changed from numbers to letters in '51. This one is surely a mystery without further information. My guess is it's a 50 with an early engine stuck in.

This truck is sitting in the middle of 100 other old trucks. The owner buys from farmers/previous owners for cheap and turns around and sells them for a profit.

I'm not able to check the frame vin(2hr drive) however next time when I'm in the area I might stop in and look.

Thank you for the clarification on the engine number. My late father's 49 F68 does not have that code, hence my confusion. Cheers, Rex
