new rad & core support

Hey fellas

Seeing as we're in the sharing mood lately, here's my latest. Back story is, I needed a new core support for this 74. As I'm in Canada it was proving really difficult to find one. Nobody who has (LMC, NPD etc) would send to me without $$$$ in shipping. I found one about an hour away from my location for $100 cash. Snagged that, did some massaging from what looked like a little fender bender, painted with Por-15 and added my new rad. The OEM rad was leak free until I decided to rinse it with running water. (doh). It would have sprung a leak but I think the rust and crud inside was the only thing holding it together. Anyway a 3 row all aluminum tig welded rad installed without problem.

My other massive win was managing to get the coolant drain plugs out of the block. You know the ones that sit under cyl 3 and 7. I bought an induction heat tool and honestly, this thing worked like a charm. Heated them both up, said a prayer, and out they spun. I'm gonna replace them with a hex head but honestly the allen head didn't even round out. Of course the gunk and sludge that came out once the hole was poked a few times was horrible... but it's all clean now. If you don't have one of these induction tools.... get one. Best $400 spent!

I feel your pain re radiator support, usually they rust out in the lower front panel, mine rusted due to sitting in long grass in a sub-tropical area for a few years
. I have been lucky enough to pick up 2 in very good condition, (no salt on Australian roads) and repair the other two.

Your truck looks great with the replacement support and alloy radiator!
I have a couple of good OEM HD radiators however am going to try a TIG/alloy unit with 2 electric fans due to a cab lift on my high boy reconstruction.

I'm interested in the induction tool you mention, could you post a photo of it?

thanks, regards Ross.

Ya sure thing! Here's the tool. There are more expensive ones which I did consider but I typically use oxy acetylene when I'm trying to loosen fasteners. I don't think I'll use this tool every day for sure. The splurg for this tool was because of the tight area for heating (and admittedly I'd been wanting to purchase 1 for a while so figured I'd spring for it).

My research led to understanding that a 1500watt model was the way to go. Having now used it, I wouldn't want any less power. Also compact size is a factor and having a couple of induction wires that can be custom bent to the shape you need is important too. This tool had all that so... I'm now lighter by CAN$400.
