I was about to report great news that my 05's A/C was finally fixed, cooling great and I was happy, until today.
We were 90 miles from home, A/C cooling perfectly and we stopped for an hour to eat. Came out, started the truck and the A/C was hot, thinking the fan had not ramped up yet we waited. When ready to get on the interstate we saw smoke and a brake clutch smell, I quickly cut off the A/C and looked, the belt was still good and spinning. We drove home the 90 miles with windows down.
I hope the compressor did not seize but at least the clutch spins.
What work have you already had done to it? By your wording, kind of seems like it’s been a massive project for you.
You were probably smelling/seeing refrigerant. I’m wondering if you have a blockage somewhere and while you were running it, the high side either just got to breaking point and blew a line or the pop-off valve on the back of the compressor /could/ have saved it. Especially if someone was in there working on it, a blockage isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
I’d assume when whoever was working on it filled the system, they added fluorescent dye to the oil too. Look for green oil around the engine compartment.
There has to be a reason for it though. I’ve never seen an ac clutch just catastrophically fail. Not saying it’s not possible. Just highly unlikely. Wonder if there just wasn’t enough oil in the system.
