You guys have inspired me to get going again. I parked the truck when blue smoke in the cab made driving not so much fun.
Tearing the engine down revealed all compression rings broken and most pistons damaged after 10 years as a daily driver. EAB heads on a Merc engine proved a little too much fun.
The other day I placed an order with Egge for new pistons, rings and main and rod bearings to freshen things up a bit. I just want it to go down the road again so not doing a complete overhaul. I know that will drive you true mechanics and OCD guys crazy, but that's ok.
Waiting for FedEx to come with the new parts on Monday!
Did the broken rings score the cylinders? What do you think caused them to break? My first thought would be insufficient ring gap. It surely wasn't too high a compression ratio!
I don't know Ross, cylinders weren't damaged. Ring gap is possible - this is an engine I bought in a farm truck and swapped it into my pickup and ran as it was except for using heads that had been shaved. CC's of the heads was similar to EAB heads. Numbers were ground off so I can only guess.
Abe, yes I do! But, a daily driver in Montana's winters gets a little breezy with all those open. It only happened when I stood on the go-pedal!
