Angry Oil leak

I have a 2001 7.3L PSD. Have a very small oil leak coming from somewhere behing the oil pan. Not on the pan but from a part behind the pan on the left side if you are looking at the front of the truck. Any ideas on what part this could be coming from.

Is the starter under the truck?

Thanks a million!

I had this same leak, except mine was fairly excessive in the amount of oil that was coming out. The dealer first replaced my rear main seal, then my valve cover gaskets, then they finally figured out it was the HPP (High Pressure Pump). This pump send the high pressure oil to the injectors, etc. Check the valley of your engine and see if there is any oil there. The dealer will put 4 oz. of flourescent dye in your oil and use a blacklight to determine the root cause of the leak. Just make sure they diagnose it properly the first time or you'll have the same fiasco I went through. It's more than likely the HPP, or possibly the turbo pedistal O-rings.

Good luck,
Terry

Was this leak covered under the 100,000 engine warranty or not?

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, it was covered. However there is a $100 deductible for the warranty work on the engine if you are outside of your 36000 mile warranty. In the end, I got my money back because they screwed up 2 times, and I ended up with a loaner Expedition from the dealer and it was fixed right the third time. If you look in the warranty guide for the PSD it tells you what is covered and what is not. A lot of things are covered under the engine warranty:

cylinder block
heads and all internal parts
intake and exhuast manifolds
flywheel
timing gear
harmonic balancer
valve covers
oil pan and pump
water pump
fuel system (excluding fuel lines and fuel tank)
high pressure lines
gaskets and seals
glow plugs
turbocharger
PCM
electronic driver unit
injectors
injector pressure sensor
high pressure oil regulator
exhuast back pressure regulator and sensor
camshaft position sensor
accelorator switch

That's the list from page seven of the Warranty Guide.

Hope this helps,
Terry

I have a 2000 Excursion w/ 7.3 Turbo Diesel. I have had oil leaks from the third month I bought it brand new in May of 2000. I've had two rear main oil seals replaced. I've had valve cover gaskets replaced. I've had a new oil pan gasket. Guess what, IT STILL LEAKS! The last time the dealer put "boots" over theturbo gaskets (I'm not too technical, but I think this is correct). What in the world is the problem!! Thanks

I just had a leak fixed as well. Mine was in the Air Charging system. The mechanic said most other technitions will misdiagnose this as it being the High Volume Oil Pump (HVOP) or more commonly as the Rear Main Seal. The leak was also causing a major loss of boost pressure. I have already noticed a serious increase in power after it was fixed.

I'm not sure this is your problem but you may want to look just in case.

Thanks a ton all!! This is my first diesel and I am glad that I got a PSD insted of a cummins. Just have a bit more faith in the fords. I bought this truck 2 weeks ago, don't even have the plates yet, and did not expect that it would have anything wrong so soon. Ohhhh well I just hope it is covered by the factory warranty. Upon closer inspection it looks as though the leak is coming from the left front corner of the oil pan, looks to be leaking out from the bolt there. Heck....who knows, I am not a mechanic, just a teacher.

Question Oil Leak - Unkown source

Kind of new to this site but I have read almost everything about oil leaks. My 99 F350 is leaking oil. Running down the back of the block on the drivers side. Changed the valve cover gasket. Changed the high pressure oil rail o-rings. changed the turbo and pedistal o-rings. No oil in the valley and a very clean engine everywhere expect the drivers side rear. Looks like it it could be be coming from somewhere around the back of the air intake. The engine runs good and it doesn't seem like the head gasket.
Help me out on this one if you know what else it could be. How could the air intake leak oil?

The crankcase is vented into the intake tract at the left valvecover.

So the PCV puts out that much oil that the Air charger on the drives side head could leak oil down the back of the engine? It isn't a huge leak but it drips on the driveway after a drive of more than 10 to 20 miles.

powerstroker250 ,

I was asking the same question when they told me it was the Air Charging System. The mechanic tried to explain it to me, then showed it to me. The die in the oil proved to me that the leak was definantly coming from the spot he showed me. But I don't know enough about it to explain it back to anyone. I even paid an International mechanic to stop by and look at it just to make sure I wasn't being taken. The International guy said the same thing.

The best I can do to describe it was the leak being under the Tubo and at the block.

Since it was the Air Charging System (or "manifold" from the are you desribed), that means you were also loosing some air on all of the cyclinders on that side. That would explain performance.
How did you fix it? I checked and no one lists a gasket for this that I can find unless I am looking for the wrong thing. I thought about changing the gaskets on both sides when I had the turbo and pedistal off since everything was out of the way but the parts stores (on-line and local) listed it as N/A or not available.
Thanks for the info.
Oh, the local Ford dealership isn't much help and I usually have to have the part numbers in advance and then they order it for me.

Hello everyone. Wish I could say that I am a long time lurker and first time poster but I can't. I just found your site today while searching for answers to a problem that I have. I am hoping that maybe you guys can help me out with a little information. Here goes.

I am the proud owner of a F-250 SD Super Cab pickup with a 7.3L PSD. The truck has never given me one problem. Because of this truck's reliability I have recently started searching for another PSD to add to the collection. I am looking for a 2002-2005 SD Super Cab 4x4 PSD. This week I found a really sweet 2002 model with 60,000 miles on it right around the corner from my house that is for sale by a private owner. I got ahold of the owner and made arrangements to drive the truck and to inspect it. A buddy of mine came with me and we looked over the truck for a good long time and the only problem that we have found is there seems to be a oil leak coming from what appears to be the left front corner of the oil pan. The leak doesn't look excessive but there is definitely something leaking. We took the truck for a ride and it runs out great. After driving it for a while we again got under it and we couldn't see any dripping. The side of the pan is oily though and covered with dirt and debris.

My big question is this. I have read here in this thread that the warranty may cover this type of problem. Does anyone know if this applies to this truck? If I were to purchase the truck could I take it to Ford and get them to perform the warranty service on the truck? I am guessing yes since it is a 100,000 mile drive train warranty, am I correct?

Any help, ideas or advice from this group will be greatly appreciated. You guys have an awesome site, keep up the good work!

Man Tex, you sure dredged up an old thread there. I believe you would be better served starting your own thread next time.

As for warranties, I believe they are transferrable. Two options, have the current owner take it for repair under warranty, (preferred), or get the vin and call the svc dept and make sure you will be covered.

Oh, and welcome to FTE.

BTW, I have kinda hosed myself. I have about 50k of powertrain warranty left on mine but a lot to remove in order to get it if I need it.
