During my most recent road trip, FUEL PRESSURE LOW popped up on my digital display. My truck began loosing power and it became difficult to maintain speed while pulling my big gooseneck horse trailer. I expected that I picked up some trash since I was trying to stretch my fuel to make it to the next exit. I had fuel in my auxiliary tank but it was not transferring as fast as I was burning it. I am not sure why I was burning so much fuel. It took my three tanks to drive 6 hours. It normally never takes more than 2. I topped off the truck tank and added some fuel additive to see if that helped but no. I continued to my destination and unhooked. I drove it short trips for two days with no load to see if straightened up but no. On the third day I replaced both fuel filters. It seemed to have more power but warning did not go away. I had no choice but to hook it back to the trailer to come back home. I was able to drive it back home doing only 55-60 mph. My 6 hr trip took 8 hrs but I made it. Any suggestions now? I will have our shop hook it to the diagnostic computer in the morning but I have another trip planned for this weekend. I would like to maybe go ahead and start ordering parts now if possible to expedite the process.
Well, even without a check engine light, I would plug a good code reader in and see what comes up.
There really should be no possible way that it would have low fuel pressure without posting a code.
You have to be very careful with a fuel pressure issue, could very well be a CP4 high pressure fuel pump going bad.
A very expensive repair.
If your high pressure pump is starved on fuel it can cost a lot of money to be repaired, anywhere between 10 to $15,000.
A bad batch of fuel, running low on fuel Is never a good thing. Diesel fuel itself is not a very clean product, diesel fuel itself can cause algae to grow, if that is the case and you run your main tank low on fuel that LG can clog the pickup screen in the bottom of your tank. That would cause low fuel pressure.
Low power and heavy towing cause very poor fuel economy.
I would pull the metering screen on the CP4 and look for metal shaving, if found I would have second thoughts. I'm looking for the culprit.
I wouldn't go too much further if you have low fuel pressure. If the CP4 high pressure pump isn't wounded already it will be trying to run in that condition. In a 2017 there's nothing mechanically clocking the piston in the pump in the correct orientation other than fuel pressure pushing against it. If it rotates the roller on the bottom won't run square on the cam and can start wearing.
I had it checked for codes today. Surprisingly it had no codes showing. We are going to drop the tank tomorrow and check the flow of that fuel pump. I will show my mechanic this thread to offer some suggestions.
