I am seeking guidance as I prepare to remove the transmission from my 2005 F150, which is no longer operational. The truck is a prerunner equipped with large 37-inch tires, and due to my demanding usage, I require a more robust solution. I am considering a 4L80E transmission and have found adapters that allow compatibility between the Ford modular engine and the Chevrolet transmission. However, I am concerned about the potentially malfunctioning without a transmission connected, as I intend to operate the 4L80E on a standalone system. When I previously disconnected the transmission, the truck displayed a transmission malfunction warning and idled at a higher rate. I am seeking advice on whether investing in the adapter is a prudent choice or if I should abandon this approach and opt for an LS swap instead to avoid the complications with the computer. However, I recently purchased a new 5.4 engine, leaving me in quite a predicament.
Nice rig.
I have never used a standalone trans controller, but if you have a list of parts to operate it standalone then you should be good.
On the other hand, (my personal opinion that likes to follow the "keep it simple stupid"), there should be a company that can beef up the stock trans for your intended use.
IDK the limits of these trans so maybe an expert could chime in.
A company like Gear Star, or the like, should be able to build you a drop in replacement that may hold up. It is certainly worth a conversation. Perhaps a 4R100 might also work better. Bauman Engineering provides a stand alone controller for several Ford options (including the 10 spd). I have not used any of these YET, but I have been looking. These are not cheap options, at your level, none are.
I'd be interesting to see what you end up doing. Good luck.
Today, I a significant shift in the project when I went under the truck and disconnected the OSS sensor on the transmission and the valve body. This caused the truck to start adjusting timing and fueling, and it began backfiring. Now, I searching for a way to spoof the sensor or find a reliable 4R75E., based on what I heard and my own experience, these transmissions are generally problematic. I have already gone through two on this truck and am frustrated with them,In addition to the unreliable 5.4L engine, which I have replaced three times, another reason I considered switching to a 4L80 is that my truck has spring rear leaf and a driveline plunge issue at full drop. I was thinking of having the driveline so that it does not have the slip yoke on the transmission side.
Yes, I am in California, unfortunately, dealing with smog Do you think the transmission throwing codes will prevent it from passing?
