Drivetrain noise
Drivetrain noise
I'm sure this has been posted before, but I'm not finding it... I'm not sure which variation of 10 speed I have in my 2018 with the 2.7 & 4x4, all in all I like it for a commuter, saving my old IDI for heavier stuff. Anyway, here in the last 6 or so months I've noticed a whining or humming noise when in the throttle over 45mph, even maintaining a coast. About a half a second after I let off the throttle, the hum goes away. I don't believe it to be the tires since they are new, and the old ones did it too, and the noise only happens when in power which kind of makes me think it's more to do with the engine. But according to passengers in the backseat, it's louder back there... Has anyone experienced this with their trucks yet?
My 2016 had both pinion bearing failure and a front wheel bearing failure. Pinion bearing noise changed with amount of torque applied (uphill vs. downhill). Front wheel bearing was constant regardless of torque, but changed when changing lanes at highway speed...
I put the read end of the truck on the jack stands today and ran it up to about 70. It indeed makes noise from that vicinity after 40mph. I think I freaked the computer out doing that though because it turned on the ABS light, lost traction control and hill start assist, and it didn't at all like being accelerated off the ground, the transmission acted like it wasn't sure what to do about the minimal resistance. The lights did go off after a simple restart and the truck was its normal self on the road thereafter.
I watched a YouTube video yesterday about replacing the bearings in the 8.8 because of the pinion bearing pitting which made a growling noise, so maybe that's where I'm at or will be experiencing soon? However, the noise isn't persistent, it will come and go and seems to fade above 75mph. Also, I have indeed replaced my right front hub a few months ago due to it growling like knobby tire was on there.
