I have seen this a few times before while working in the shop, and all the times it is because the vaccum can (tomatoe can) is rusted threw. The egr valve opens up with vaccum, and it cant when you are pressing on the gas and taking all the vaccum away, and it cant if it has not vaccum build up, which is normaly in the can. The computer does not know that you have a hole in that can, it just see through the O2 and the map sensor that when erg is called for nothing happens.
When my truck threw this code it just ended up being the EGR position valve sensor was screwed (thats the white part on top of the EGR Valve, it has the plug in it) try unplugging that, take it off (should be 3 screws, and when you take it out it has a small gasket on it, and a push-pin type thing coming out of it) see if this is clogged or jammed or anything of the sort, if it is, get it replaced, its only about $15-$20 for the Position Sensor, if it is your actual EGR Valve though, a new pipe may be needed for it, and I must say these are tough, I've snapped one getting it off, and had one snap on me while driving after putting it on, terrible things! IF ALL ELSE FAILS, A new EGR valve is like $80.
where is the egr valve on a 302 anyway? I remember reading a thread about squirting some carb cleaner in the egr valve and tubes to keep it clean. I was wondering were to disconnect it to do this.
Matt
I would be intersted in hearing more about cleaning it also. I am having a slight stumble that I cant diagnose. I ent to wal mart to get a reader and they did not have any at all, so I drove across town to another one and still no go
EGR's are notoriuos for getting carboned up. Seafoam works wonders on them. There's also a procedure in most manuals for cleaning them. It'll give you the proper size drill bit diameter for cleaning the main orifice
On a 302/351 the EGR Valve will be mounted on the right bank, in the rear (as seen from the view of the driver) it is a little round thing, with a white/greyish thing on top with a quick-connect plug in it, thats the Position Sensor, the round thing with the long tube coming out of it and going down into the manifolds, thats the EGR Valve itself.
Also clean out the passage from the EGR to the manifold. Quite often this gets gummed up and will set this code. This is also a good time to clean out the throttle body.
