Was talking with a coworker the other day about needing a 3/4 ton truck to haul building materials around with. My '13 1/2 ton can tow some, but not a lot. Especially with the V6, non-turbo (however, that engine hasn't given me any issues). With that being said, he stated his dad had just a truck. He had a 2003 V10 F250, crew cab, 4x4. The engine has 319,000+ miles on it. Problem is, he let the oil get low, and the engine is seized up. Interior is good, body is good, suspension is good. Anyway, I gave $500 for the truck and hauled it home. I've found a couple of engines with 3 hours of me, but I'm not sure what year model V10's would match up. I've seen several 5.4's, but I believe I'd need a new engine harness and new ECM. Does anyone have a compatibility chart? If I understand it right, a '99-'04 V10 would be an easy swap, if I go with a 5.4 from those years, it's a wiring change and ECM change. Can I use a 5.4 or 6.8 from other years? Just trying to get a feel of my options. Thanks.
Have you looked at doing a swap for a diesel? Like a 12 valve or 24 valve Cummins swap? Or are you dead set on what you’re doing? I’d imagine if you stayed within the same body style on the years the engines would be similar enough to fit.

Your ‘03 V-10 is the 2 valve version of the 6.8.
Any ‘99 through ‘04 6.8 from a pickup will be a direct swap, although the ‘99 model is a pre-PI (Performance Improved) design, so a little less HP/TQ.
Any 6.8 from an Excursion ‘00 through ‘05 will be a direct swap, they are all PI 2V models.
A 6.8 from an Econoline van or motorhome can work with a few changes like swapping intake manifolds, oil pans and oil pump pickups. The vans kept the 2V 6.8 when the trucks went to the 3V design.
The early motors, up to the start of ‘03 have the short count spark plug threads, ‘03 and up will have the increased number of plug threads to vastly reduce the chance of a plug blowout. But even the older motors with the short threads can be more reliable with fresh plugs (and new rubber boots) torqued to 26/28 ft/lbs.
I would replace all of the exhaust manifold studs while the engine is out, much easier access to those break prone studs.
I agree with the last poster and will give a small bit of advise .
if you have a 2 post hoist , this will be much easier , by lifting the cab and front clip .
if not , then removing the hood , grill, head lights and core support is easier than lifting the engine high enough with a cherry picker ...
