I'm buying an old pickup just for the rack and tires. In the bed is a 300 6 cyl with a 5 spd bolted onto it. Guy said it was in an early 80's truck and is overdrive.
cast iron with pto plate on right hand side.
does anyone know what this could be or what number should I get off it? the truck is a little ways from me and I apologize for the scant info.
Hmm, You sure it's not cast aluminum? All the 5 speeds are aluminum. A PTO equipped 5 speed is a ZF unit.
Is this an integral bellhousing piece? If it is, it's a 5 speed.
I suspect that with it being all cast iron, it's a T-18 4 speed. Unless it's a big truck 5 speed.

I guess that's why I'm asking, I think it might be a big truck deal. That old, it would almost have to be out of a medium truck. bell housing is seperate. I'm just going to have to drive back down there and check it out.
If it is cast iron, with dual PTO covers, and a aluminum top cover, it will probably be a New Process 540 series. 1 1/2" clutch shaft,
Shift patern will be
1 2 4 R
X 3 5 X
The NP emblem should bein the cast iron somewhere. (Clark 5 sps were also used behind some engines, but they usually have a nice tag on the drivers side, just behind the PTO cover. Hope this helps, Bob

Just re read your post. With only one PTO cover, I don't beleive it is a 5 sp.
Thanks so much. It was late, I wasn't thinking. I am going back and check these out. I just could see the one side, will look really good.
I have an 85 6.9 F250 and a 70 Derdge D200, both of which I would like to put a 5 spd in. I know the chances of this trans ( if it is a 5 spd) will modify to either are slim.
Next is my 73 with a 390 C6 that is weak. I might replace the c6 with this 5 spd.

Well, you're right, it only has one PTO and, lo and behold, the shift **** is now gone. Man insisted it was 5spd, but it is not, in the daylight I could tell.
Thanks to you guys, I changed my mind about another deal this fellow was eggin' me into, so I may have saved myself some grief.
