Daily driver recommendations

Ok guys I really like my 94 F150 but 15 mpg is killing me on my daily commute. I am looking for something with good fuel mileage and drive forever. Got any recommendations?

I have been looking at:
-Saturn SL2/SC2 5 spd (plastic, non rusting body is a big plus in WI)
-Toyota Celica 5 spd (22re motor is bullet proof)
-Honda Accord 5 spd (1.6L 4 cyl is a very good motor)
-VW jetta TDI (Turbo diesels are just plain cool)

I would like a 96+ b/c that will have OBDII but it is not a must. I don't care one bit what it looks like I just want something that goes forward and doesn't cost much to drive.

Thanks for the advice!
Dave

The Saturn and Accord will run about forever........but I can say that the Saturn with an automatic tranny is a could money pit.

Talk to Kwikordead about the VW's You can usually find him in the Superduty forums. He is a VW mechanic and swears by the cars. I know the new Jettas with the diesel are getting a claimed 46mpg.
I have a Honda Civic for my DD. 200k and still get 35-40mpg. The Honda's will run forever with little maintenance.

Toyota: most fun of your list, reliable

Honda: reliable, may respond to 4" muffler sticking 1foot out the back, a big wing and a Thumpmaster stereo. (kidding)

Saturn: Uh, ok, if them other guys say so.. Dealers get high marks, that works for me.

VW: great if you get a good one. Check the old Consumer Reports list of trouble spots.....

The VW would be heads and shoulders above the other 3 cars there...

A Focus wouldn't be a bad choice either...

The Focus just doesn't seem too appealing to me. They are also fairly new on the market and I am looking for something really cheap. Its an option I haven't considered though so I will look into it. Thanks for the idea!

You may want to consider getting a scooter. No, Im not kidding, they make big ones with automatic trannys and huge storage space. Yes, you lose your diginty, but you also get 80-100mpg easy. They are very common in Europe where gas prices are anywhere from $5.00-$6.00 a gallon.

You better believe it....I usually averaged 30 to 32 with my '94 Ranger. I sold it right before gas prices started to rise!

Early (2000 - 2001) models were recalled heavily. I just traded in a 2002 ZTS with zero recalls and one dealer repair visit in 30,000 miles (bad rotors from supplier around 10,000 miles). I averaged 28 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. I would pick a Focus over all the cars you mentioned. They have a great Focus forum called focaljet. Do your research there.

Well I thought that a focus with a 5 speed would get awesome mileage, dont look half bad, and are still a blue oval product, but I relize you just want something for fuel mileage and wouldn't feel bad about thrashing a honda or toyota.
whatever fit's the budjet.

if you want cheap, my friend had a 1988 olds cutlass with a 4 banger, got somewhere almost to 30 mpg, and the car was 700 bucks

if you can slap together a few maintenance tasks, you'll get yourself a decently sized car, good milage, and relatively comfortable. Have a nice day.

Ryan
Same goes for old ford escorts. you can get a manual tranny with some of those... kinda fun.
