Hello, I've got a question on a 96 Ranger. I've got a shake in the front end. I thought it was a bad tire so I replaced the front tires. That didn't solve the problem. I'm wondering if it could be wheel bearings. But they are not making noise. I checked the ball joints and I don't see any movement when I rock the wheels. When I rock the wheel at 3 and 9 and 6 and 12. I get some play. However, I don't know what amount is excessive. When rock the wheel I don't see any movement at the ball joints, but it does seem like the rotor is rocking which is what makes me suspect the ball joints. But, as O said, they are not making any noise. Also, the play is the same on both front wheels. Any help would be appreciated.
It sounds like a tire or wheel problem. If you spin the wheels next to something like a jack stand you can see variation. Pay attention to how true the rims run. A bent rim can be difficult to figure out since changing tires doesn't solve the problem.
