Good day I have a 2017 F350 King Ranch Dooley over the winter the front driver side axle shaft had to be replaced and about a month a I started hearing grinding and clicking took the wheel off assumed it was my bearings, but all that seems intact upon inspection .
driver side axle shaft has a lot of play as the dust cover seems have broken off, so my question -is the dust cover also and more importantly what keeps that shaft in alignment? If the inside lip of the axle tube is chewed up to where the dust cover won’t seat is that fixable or am I going to have to get a new front axle?
The dust seal on the outer part of the axle housing is just that, a dust seal, there is no bearing.
The oil seals are adjacent to the differential housing, way inboard in the tubes. It is normal for the half shaft to have a little radial play.
You can pull the half shaft out to replace the dust seal, but it really won't hurt anything to leave it as is, unless you frequent deep water with your truck.
