Magnify the Odometer ?

I am forevermore referring to my Odometer which involves the flashlight, the seeing eye glass, and a bit of guesswork --- all impossible to do while driving --- man, that thing is tiny...

It has plagued me for forty years and it is now time to address the issue...

One big problem is that the window is too narrow; thus, unless the "tenths" are almost perfectly rolled into view, it is very difficult to tell just where on the "tenths" the roll is at. === I believe I can cure this by making the window wider. --- Can I get that thin cover out and in my hands without involving gauge needles and such ?

Okay, now for the bigger problem; --- how, what, and where can I add a Magnifying Glass over the tiny Odometer Numbers such that I can shift my eyes toward them and see them easily while driving ?

I had thought possibly one of those credit-card-sized magnifiers located either right on the black cover or on the outside of the clear plastic cover, possibly slicing the credit-card to a more suitable size.

Another thought is to procure a small rectangular seeing eye glass and somehow attach that, either right against the black cover or on the outside of that clear cover.

Has anyone else addressed this issue and how did you go about it ?

Just playing with a magnifier I got from donating to one of the veterans org's, it needs to be held away from what your reading about 2" to get larger numbers.

Ok, I went out and checked. And I thought this was ... well... not going to work. But it does.

hmmm, well i cant say thats a problem for me with my 84. But i would think pulling the lens from a cheap magnifying glass and gluing/ taping it to the cover may work.

From a normal driving point of view, did it make seeing easier ?

Oh, I didn't drive with that, just went out to test your theory. You could cut and tape a piece over the area. Be careful as there is a gap between the clear lens and the housing.

It's hot out, so I didn't spend a lot of time out there.

Perhaps the best option is to get a set of those magnifyers that ride about 1/2” from your eyes. I think even Walmart sells them. 👀+🔎=👓

I wonder if you could use small pieces of sticky back Velcro to hold the magnifier in place. That spacing may make the number look bigger.

Good idea about the spacing.

I was thinking more along the lines of some stainless machine-screws through threaded holes in the clear plastic; and then, I could stack nuts between the plastic and the magnifier to fine-tune spacing.

Of course, all that would come after some much simpler experimenting.

Oh no no no, I wouldn't put screws in there. You can try spacing with the sticky backing too, just add thick tape under it. Think about it.

If you have a EZpass, you can have them send you new Velcro pads for free. I got some for the new car

Besides looking once in awhile to see when to change your oil every 3000 miles, why do you look at it all the time? Does your fuel gauge not work and you use it for filling up? If you widen the window, all you are going to do is expose more numbers. So then you have to decide which number to use, as you will be seeing two or three numbers at one time.

I had that thought too. But I didn’t want to sound judgmental. 🙂 LOL

I figured I’d just try and help.

but inquiring minds want to know…

Paid by the loaded mile is one reason.

These things work good. I had a electronic speedometer go bad in a Honda, and I used a GPS speedometer to replace it. It wasn't this one, it didn't have a odometer like this one does. But it does have a clock. Start the car up, the time is always wrong. But after about 30 seconds it's dead on. Drive about 1/2 mile and the speedometer is dead on.

They have this satellite business down pat.

I have a Canon 7DMkII Camera with GPS capabilities; like your GPS speedometer, it takes it a bit to get a lock on the situation; but, once it does, the GPS coordinates for every photo are dead-on in my boot tracks where I was standing when the photo was taken.

I can look at the GPS Metadata of each photo and it is unreal how many satellites the camera is communicating with at any given time; it is not at all unusual for it to be seeing 26 to 28 satellites and I have seen as high as 38 satellites at one time; I don't check every photo - there may be some with even more.

If paid be mile you would only need to look at it at the start and stop of each pick up.
I did not get paid by mile but did have to track mileage for loads and then break it down when crossing state lines for fuel tax reasons.
So if doing it start / stop the mag glass I would think would work as you could just hold it there but not knowing just how you need to break down the milage that may not work.
I did use a truckers GPS, Rand McNally, that you could program with the trucks milage and it would remind you for service and things. I never used it but I cant see why that would not show milage like you need to?
