Not sure what's happening with your truck, but I have mine disconnected completely. I have a Tymar intake and there's no place to hook it up so I have it zip-tied in place next to the filter. No problems so far...and it sounds really cool when I step on it.
All a filter minder does is tell you how much restriction there is in your intake, or how hard your engine has to "suck" to get the air it needs. Unless it is different from mine there is no connection with anything in the engine computer or fuel management system. As you require more air flow you need to upgrade the filter to handle the increased demands of the engine.
Resetting the filter minder is only ignoring the fact your air restriction is too high. It shows the highest restriction experienced. When you are not running hard you have much lower air flow requirements thus lower vacuum in the intake. It should only be reset when the filter is either cleaned out or changed.
I checked the owners manual and it stated that the wiring to the "Filter Minder" triggered the dash light.
I'm just going to disconnect it and see what happens
Yeah, you should see the Donaldson filter that comes with the severe duty. Now I know why it has some restriction and costs so much. Huge filter, multiple wraps of some type of material, doesn't look like paper fibre or foam. Very elaborate with a huge rubber seal around the perimeter.
What are you guys looking at? There is no wiring for the filter minder. It is simply a guage in the filtration system to let you know what the restriction level is. You simply reset it by pushing the end of it to release the vacuum. Unless things have changed, I do not know what you guys got going.
On my "02" PSD there is a two wire switch on the minder that evidently triggers a dash light warning if it is restricted.
I just didn't know if it was somehow also connected to the ECM as well to default the engine to some crappy limp mode or something.
It looks as if it just is connected to the dash warning light only and I'm disconnecting it.
I have never seen one with wires to it but regardless of wiring or not you are getting too much intake restriction. With the stock system the minder will not move until the filter is getting pretty dirty. I am running the TYMAR system on both of my strokes and they never will move the minder even when the filter looks totally plugged. I don't know anything about the AIS Severe Duty Filter and intake assembly but I would say take it back if it is making that kind of restriction. The PSD needs alot of air to operate efficiently and it sounds like this filter is choking it off pretty bad.
This is the Severe Duty air intake unit that fixes the broken tab and dusting issues the PSD's have had. It is a Motorcraft labeled intake, is made by Donalsdson and maintains warranty.
I am sure it is designed for "stock" programmed trucks and not "chipped" PSD's.
I gues I'll run a tank or two and see what happens to mileage, performance, etc.
I used a 4" hole saw to add 5 additional openings on the Ford AIS casing to help increase airflow, it did not seem to make much difference. I just remove the Ford AIS when I run the SCMT program and clamp the Tymar back on.
