I'm looking at going to a 5.8 EFI and 5 Speed M50D. He's my q's:
First, has anyone had any issues or regrets with this setup? My 5.0/AOD is good unloaded, but with payload or towing it's weak. I've even put in 4.10 gears, B&M shift kit, and the engine has a Blue Racer towing cam, BBK headers, elect fan, underdrive pullies.
I went to the AOD because after 2 E4OD rebuilds, I'd had enough. Now the AOD just isn't as what I expected. The 4.10s helped the off the line and high ratio 1st gear in the AOD. But I was looking for the 5 speed for better towing and overall drivability with the stick such as down shifting, off roading, etc.
The 5.8 I think will be better with the extended cab and long bed. I'm also setup with a 3" body lift and 32x11.5 tires A/Ts. I want to convert to MAF over the speed density as well.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I was told this was the site to post questions on with respectable replies.
If you don't like the AOD, you'll hate the M5. The Mazdog is a relatively weak tranny and may not stand up to a 351. Also its 1st gear ratio is only 3.9:1, not nearly big enough to get a trailer moving. If you're going to do a tranny swap to a manual, get a ZF out of an F250 or F350. Way stronger with better ratios.
