Hi all, I have a 69 F-100, I am wanting to put in a 390 engine, but I would also like to have overdrive. Is there a later model pickup with an AOD that will bolt up to an older 390?

You can expect to pay $2795 for a street tranny that will handle up to 400hp, and it will cost you $3395 for a tranny that handles 400hp to 700hp. Oh yeah, then there's shipping and other options to choose from.
I was actually hoping more along the lines of something from a wrecked mid 80's F-350 or something. Will an AOD from a 460 bolt up to a 390? How about a trans from a 351W?
To my knowledge, limited at best , the FE has it's own bellhousing pattern. The smallblocks have their own pattern, and the 429-460's and the 351M-400M share the bigblock pattern.
The 351M-400M (351C too?) are considered big blocks technically.
If anyone knows something else.....please contribute .
FE motors do have their own bolt pattern, and the last production date for FEs was 1976 for trucks and 1971 for cars. The chances look a little slim, but if you find one, please let us know were you got it. Hope that helps a little
I'd rather do it! I still think that $325 adapter from fb is for a 429/460. It says Big Block, and that does not mean FE BB. As before- the AOD uses Throttle Valve, not vacum, the OD can be turned off by a switch. If switch is ON then OD can be engaged above 55mph by TV Cable Setting, a lot like old manual OD you reach OD speed and lift off gas slightly. You have to have an adapter. And all I know is what I've read about AOD needing to be beefed up to handle higher Torque and HP so I used Lentech - I suspect any Good Trans shop could beef up for your needs for less $$$. I think I could write an article on how much fun it is to have a FE powered 67 truck with an AOD Trans, but I couldn't write a paragraph about the technical aspects of this.
Do you have to have an over drive gear? If not, have you considered a gear swap on your rear end. I have a 73 model truck with a 390 and gas milaege was bad with 3:50 gears. I bought a complete rear end from the wrecking yard with 3:00 gears along with traction lock for $300. Took about an hour to bolt in, and fuel mileage went up about 3 mpg. Much cheaper and easier than O.D.
AOD's were never offered on a 460, I believe. The AOD is really not as strong as a C6 and in my opinion, the AOD would be downgrading if you already have a C6 in.
The above post is true. But - that is why they Beef up the AOD, and there are 10 second cars many with 460's that have beefed up AOD's. Why - because of the OD part. Not for the strip use, but the drive to and from the strip, or on the Power Tour, or drive from WI to SuperNats. As I've said and many with AOD agree, it's so much fun to do 75 all day with engine purring along at 22-2300rpm instead of 33-3400. For out of the box how much power can it handle comparisions of course the famous C-6 wins hands down. But if you want OD ...
Oh and also what the OD part does is allow you to switch to lower gears, I went from stock 3.25 to a 3.55.
460 Engines were offered with an overdrive in the 80's. The trannsmission was called en e4od. Id imagine it would mount to a 390. This is electronically controlled and a real POS tranny in the first place, so you really dont want it. You can use it but you either have to convert to efi or get a control module. If you want an overdrive your best bet is a ford aod or a chevy 700r4. I can say chevy on here right? They make adapters for them to fit. You will probably need to get the tranny built bc the 390 can rip one apart if you have it making alot of hp. Anyways here is a couple of links to the transmission adapters.
