Valve seats for fe

Quick question that I really can't find an answer for.
Rebuilding an fe motor out of my 73 f100, and want to do some head work before assembly. Heads are
c8ae-h. Do i need to have the valve seats machined to accept hardened seats, or are they already inserts that I can pop out/replace? Already blew budget on rebuild, so if machining is needed I can forget about that, and move on. Thanks!

You have two choices.
Either have hardened seats and valved installed or add a lead substitute to every tank of gas.
Hardened seats didn't really start until 1975.

Hard seats have to have the heads machined for them not something you can do yourself. if you want to do it right get them done, if this is just a budget build and you're not looking for durability you can skip them and just drive. for quite a while , but they will get you eventually.

there's a 90% chance your guides are shot and they'll need replaces as well. this is a must unless you like blue smoke.

Heads are expensive to work on and it's important they be done right. save money somewhere else or regret it.

Dang it. Well mabey i will get lucky when i strip the heads apart, and it will already have seats installed.. I noticed that all the valve seals were pulled up at the top of the springs. Only 2 of them were where they should be, and I have had a set sitting on the shelf for a few years. At the very least I am gonna tear em down and inspect today. Truck never lost a drop of oil, never smoked, and never once had to add any in the 10 years I owned it. thanks for confirming

Yeah I'd suggest getting the heads done. You're hopefully only going to have to get into this once. It'll save time- money- agrivation

Reman Ford 360/390 FE cylinder heads. This looks like a decent price.

If those have hard seats, new valves and guides it's a fair price. $800 - $900 on a set of FE heads is typical.

Those "umbrella" valve seals don't really like to stay on the head. If that's the type of seal you have.

Got lucky. Hardened seats were already installed at last rebuild the machine shop did in the 90s. They looked almost new, and shiney. Just cleaned up valves, and a quick lap with new seals. Deck surfaces were even still perfectly flat. Thanks!
