Chasis Swap Question

I'm new to this thread. I have a 1976 f-100 that I have been working on. I was wandering if its possible to swap the 1976 f-100 body over to a 1982 f-150 chasis? Any insights into this would be greatly appreciated.

Any thing can be done, with enough time, money and determination. A tape measure will be the best place to start, and just like our 73-79's you need a title for the 82's frame, NOT the body. Unlesss your state and DMV is not picky about that. I am sure there are going to be some wiring challanges for that body swap though.

I gotta ask, why do you want to swap it? 2wd to 4wd, no title for the 76?

The truck I have now is a two wheel drive and i would like a 4wd better. Also the title for this truck is held by another person who we have been trying to contact but they wont ever get back with us. Would a 1980-1995 f-250 chasis bolt up any better?

Ah the ol 2wd to get a 4wd swap. I believe there are some changes in the1980 and up, not nothing major IMO. But I can see it is going to cause you some work extra for sure. Any way to get a 4wd 73-79 frame, (a 4wd 78/79 frame) would be the best to swap the 76 body onto. And could be done in a weekend if you have a few good freinds.

So how did you get the 76 without a title? Was it sold to you without a title, or did you buy it without a title? I know "things happen", but having the title to a truck you own is alwasy the best route to go. I know some states have different laws governing title/versus no title vehicle sales.

What about just sale the 76 and buy a 73-79 that is already 4wd? You might 1st ask your local DMV what is the legal procedure to do a body swap. Might save you some headaches down the road.

A quick Google search...In North Carolina, it's illegal to sell a vehicle without a valid title. If you buy a car without a title, you can request a duplicate title from the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) using form MVR4. You may also need to provide alternative documentation like a bill of sale or previous registration documents to prove ownership.

Elaboration:
  • Title Requirement:
North Carolina law requires a title to be presented when selling or transferring ownership of a vehicle.
  • Requesting a Duplicate Title:
If you've purchased a vehicle without a title, you can file an MVR4 (Motor Vehicle Report Request) with the NCDMV to request a copy of the title.
  • Proof of Ownership:
You may need to provide additional documentation, such as a bill of sale, to prove ownership if you can't obtain the title.
  • Bonded Title:
If the title is lost or unavailable, you might need to obtain a bonded title. This requires purchasing a surety bond and may also involve a vehicle inspection.
  • Legal Consequences:
Attempting to sell a vehicle without a title is illegal. The seller is legally required to present the title at the time of sale.

X2 on Rich's words of advice.

I have contemplated something similar, I have a 66 F250 2wd/NP435, I also have a 92 F250 4wd/7.5/ZF5... whilst partaking of an adult beverage or 3 with a buddy a while back, I/we pondered this, if I don't sell the 66 I may actually attempt it once I get my 2-post lift set up. Will it be completely legal in the communist state of Kalifornia... probably not, but... personally IDGAF, it'll have the plates and title of the 66, having a few friends in the CHP and talking with them, basically they DGAF, if you get stopped for a moving violation, you have current reg. and insurance, they'll more than likely (98% of the time, according to them and their comrades) just issue give you a coupon for more off of your next paycheck and send you on your way. Now if it's something more serious, and they start looking at VIN's, all bets are off and you get what ya get and don't throw a fit because you knew... YMMV

I don't look at anything that doesn't have title in hand. Bitter pill to swallow sometimes. Many many years ago bought truck that had state assigned serial number. Insurance had a fit and was hard to get rid of. Never again.

There's someone on this forum that is doing that swap. Haven't seen them post for a while don't remember their user name. Start searching thru old posts, maybe 5 months old & newer.

DON"T DO ANYTHING UNLESS YOU HAVE THE PROPER TITLE OR PAPERWORK.
I found out the hard way when I bought an 86 Ford SW in NC. Thought I had all the paper work but couldn't get the title in my name in VA or NY. Turned out there was a title application, a bill of sale from
a company that went out of business 3 years before I bought the vehicle. Guy I bought the car from got it from the out of business company and had it licensed some how. Got the address from the NC DMV
of the person who's name was on the title. No response after several tries. I could have swapped the VIN tag and header panel from an 89 wagon (with title) I had. But didn't want to take a chance.
Stripped down the wagon and sold it for a demolition derby.
