You should be able to decode the door tag from there, just verify the model year.
I would think Gary's site would have the decoding too. I know I've seen it before...
Found this,
B = BW T-85 3sp ('76-78 ), Clark OD 4sp ('79-86), Ford SROD/Tremac T170 4sp, or T199 (Mexico only)
Yep, that's exactly what the guy told me that is doing the rebuild..
I got it out last night though it took me about an hour and a half. It wasn't too bad.
And I see it as a Tremac but I cant see to good and got papers to prove it
Any of the 3sp w/ over drive (4sp) are weak and dont last but it is what it is.

I wonder if the reputation of being weak is because people were driving them as if it was a 4 speed instead of a 3 speed with OD? I'm thinking 3rd gear is unity and the over drive is under unity. So you wouldn't want to shift to OD unless you were exceeding 45 to 50 mph minimum and really best at highway speed, level grades. Probably these transmissions get abused and lugged in OD putting a lot of load on the gear box.
It's a derivative of the old Ford toploader design. So technically I guess it is a design from Ford. Who actually made it, Ford or some other contractor, I am not sure. In the one picture above you can see "FORD" emblem cast into the side of it.
Just to follow up... I took it to the guy who is doing the rebuild. I was there when he cracked it open. It basically had usual wear and tear. There were a couple of broken chips in the pan from one of the gears and that silvery color of fine metal shavings (powder). He is putting a new rebuild kit in it. The bearings were pretty shot. It made almost a roaring sound when I was driving it.
Hey, thank you guys for all of the info. I appreciate it.
here are a couple of pics
I have a T18 that would give that transmission a good run for its money on the bad gears.
I think if it was mine when I got it back in and on the road I would start looking for a M5OD from 1 of the 87> trucks.
It is a 5speed were 5th is over drive and are a little more robust than that trans you have.
Only thing is because it uses a hydraulic clutch you need the clutch pedal from a 84 to 86 truck, clutch master and reinforcing plate for the firewall, you can use it to locate where the holes need to be drilled.
If you can get the crossmember and brackets, floor tunnel pan, and drive shaft as it my fit your truck if your old drive shaft dose not fit get it made so it does fit.
There are a few posts in here of members that have done this swap. I think the hardest part is finding a M5OD transmission & pedal the rest you might be able to use from your truck?
BTW the M5OD was used in F150 & F25 trucks so it is a stronger trans.
