I have a 2001 7.3L, it has 110k original miles, 100% stock engine. My grandfather took delivery of the truck in October 2000. Yesterday, on the way home from the campground my truck made a VERY hard shift when I shifted the transmission form (1) to (D). Ever since that happened the truck will not make shift up from 1st unless I lift the throttle, and then it goes straight to 3rd. It seems to lock up fine in 3rd and 4th gear.
Based on my research, it seems that I have a mechanical diode that has failed. How do I know that it is the problem for certain, and not just a valve body issue? Forgive me, I am fairly mechanical, but I know next to nothing about automatic transmissions.
I talked with a couple local, but highly recommended shops. Looks like about $3k - $4k for a removal, rebuild, and re-install. I would love to order a BTS, but I cannot wait that long nor do I have $7k+ for the repair.
Should I avoid driving the truck at all costs? Wasn't sure if further damage would be done if so.
What are the questions I should be asking them?
Are there specific parts I should be requesting in the rebuild?
