Muffled horn fix

After putting up with not very loud horns, for a long time, and reading around the web and finding something about turning the screw on the side of the horn 1/2 to 3/4 turn. Today I finally decided it was time to look at the muffled horns.

I took both horns off, after spraying the bolts with fluid, then sprayed the Phillips head screws, after a few minutes I turned both screws about 3/4 turn out, put one horn back in the truck. Boy was I surprised when it sounded normal. Both back in and they sound like real horns now.

I think it was one of the Dave's that mentioned doing that.

That was easy.

I should go out and get a picture, so others can see the screw, It really is an easy fix. It's stopped raining again, I'll go snap a photo.

First is the horn behind the driver's side headlight, second pic is the one behind the bump, that shows the screw.

You can also turn the screw while the horn is make noise, if you are looking for a certain pitch. If you have 2 horns, try for a blend of different tones.

Funny this came up, I just put the steering wheel back together on my 81 F100 project yesterday, and got the horn to work... but it kinda sounds like stepping on a duck.. Granted I should pull it off, and make sure its not full of mud daubers or stuff. I had forgot about the screws on those, I might try it. ALso I just have one like Dave does.. I might just replace it was some good aftermarket horns.

I would if the 1 horn has to do with being a F100 (80-82) or a base model truck, a Custom in my case?
I did seen t somewhere some only had 1 horn but dont remember it saying if by years or models?

I have also given thought of just replacing it that is as far as it gets

Ya mine is a base base model custom. About the only option it has is a T18 4 speed, and power steering unless they all came with that.

The wiring diagrams show one horn or two horn options all the way to 1986. They call the single horn "low pitch" and the dual horns have one "low pitch" and one "high pitch. No note in the diagram about which models got the one or two horns.

Mine was the same T18 & P/S.
I was going to say back then a manual transmission was standard but I would think the 3sp on the tree would be standard and the T18 a manual option?

But if you where to look my truck over it also now has factory AC, power brakes and dual tanks, dual tanks never an option on a flare side
