Coolant Filter for OBS

Is there an add on coolant filter setup for the OBS other than the Dieselsite kit?

I can't find one. Tons of kits for 99 and newer though.

I don't mind going with the Dieselsite kit but I like to compare different option when able. The kicker is Dieselsite is out of stock on them.

I contacted Clay at Riff Raff first but they do not have an OBS kit, that one kinda surprised me. Figured for sure if anyone had one, they would.

Admittedly, one thing I like about the Dieselsite kit is the port on the filter block for adding a temp or pressure sensor. I don't know if I would use it but I like options.

Go to a parts house and find a filter head that the water filter will screw on to.Then mount it where you want it. Plum it from the heater hose coming out of the block to the filter and out of the filter to the heater core.

Pretty sure the dieselsite kit is based off the actual International engine water pump.

I hear ya on doing it yourself. Sometimes I'm a do-it-yourselfer, and sometimes I realize I'm probably going to make 4 separate trips to the store and need to figure out fabbing up a mounting bracket if I tackle it myself and realize it is worth the extra cost and savings of time and less headache to get a kit with everything needed from the get go. The problem is sometimes I realize that second part after I'm knee deep in something!

The other thing is I have an intercooler that is already plumbed into the heater core hose as you mention so I don't want to restrict that flow. The kit I'm looking at comes off of a tap on the water pump and returns back to expansion tank.

The kit I'm looking at is a standalone filter. If I needed a new water pump, I'd consider the pump with the integrated filter you show.

For what it will take to do it, you may end up with a cleaner install by using the international pump with the integrated filter. No extra mounting brackets and extra hoses.

also, can you start a thread or give some info on your WTA cooler and how you like it. I have seen it but not many have one so there isn’t much first hand info on it

For what it's worth I have the International style pump with the filter on it. Had it for years. Decent shot of it here when I just replaced the oil pump. It's a much cleaner install then adding more hoses and brackets as mentioned.

24763 Wix head and 24070 filter buy whatever hoses and fittings needed accordingly. Mount wherever.

FWIW I own the Diesel site kit and would buy again.

I like the idea of this pump. Do you know if this pump has an external port on it like the stock pump does? The supply port used for the external filter system.

[QUOTE=97-psd;21575668]For what it will take to do it, you may end up with a cleaner install by using the international pump with the integrated filter. No extra mounting brackets and extra hoses.

I was considering the International pump with the integrated filter but decided to hold off on that for now. There are a few reasons why.

I know myself and I know it wouldn't just be the new pump. I am the type of person that as long as something is torn apart, I'm going to take care of or upgrade anything else I am touching and that rabbit hole can creep, fast. So that means I'd probably also end up with the billet thermostat housing, a harmonic balancer, I'd probably go ahead and upgrade the fan to the Dieselsite fan so I might as well do the fan clutch and would need the spacer due to the harmonic balancer, etc. As you can see, that 500 dollar pump to get the filter I wanted quickly turns into over 2 grand! If I go after the add on filter system that would be just 200 bucks, for now anyways.

I also would like to do a cleaning of the coolant system. I wish I had thought ahead and done the coolant system cleaning before installing the intercooler as that process added 2 heat exchangers to the system and they could have stayed cleaner/more efficient longer. I'll start the cleaning by using the add on filter system and RMI-25. With the cleaning of the system, crap can break free and potentially cause seal issues with the water pump so I'm hoping the add on filter system will help alleviate that. The RMI-25 seems to not be too aggressive but if I was to trash a pump I'd rather trash a 30 year old pump than a new 500 dollar pump and go through the hassle of swapping it out again. Then down the road at some point when the water pump does go bad, I could upgrade to the International integrated filter pump and could use the add on filter for a different project.

I will at some point but I haven't worked the cooler with pulling a trailer yet so I don't feel I can give a true assessment yet.

Here is a thread where there is a little discussion about it and some pictures.

Is your Dieselsite kit in an OBS? If so, do you mind posting a picture? Every install I see is on a Super Duty and the mounting bracket is different so I'm wondering how/where it gets mounted in the OBS. Thanks.

Might be some in my build thread, not close to truck currently for pics. I can see if my bro can snap some.

Mine is their revised kit that mounts on the passenger side by the alternator. Return from the filter head goes to the expansion tank. Supply I am almost positive is off the water pump. Their older kit mounted by the brake booster as I understand.

The aforementioned Wix parts I posted I use in various vehicles with neglected systems I am cleaning. @96SD I believe just saw the filter from my '01 Screw after changing it. Still full of ****.

Supply on those is off the heater core supply, return goes to the core. Note the coolant volume output into the core is pretty slow as it has to flow through the filter first.

Evaporust is a great system cleaner, it will dissolve rust and clean like you have never seen. Runs about $25/gallon. I have heard citric acid works well for flushing too.

No need to worry about the heater cores on these if fail, beyond easy to swap.

Thanks Hit Man X.

I have a Dieselsite kit on the way so sounds like it should be mounted near the alternator.

I also have some RMI-25 on the way for cleaning the system.
