1978 LN700 diesel decode

R71BVAJ8564. I think these are the correct numbers. I am unsure of the year but I do know that it is an L7000. Just looking to decide the vin. Thanks

Welcome to FTE! I'll give you your own thread for this truck. You can add to it for other questions if you like.

R71 = LN700 diesel (also badged with the 7000 number)

8 = Cummins NTC350 six cylinder 855 CID diesel engine
Edit:
B = Caterpillar V190-3208 V8 diesel engine

V = Kentucky Truck Plant

AJ8564 = 1978 numerical series, October 1977 production

183 = 183 inch wheelbase

J3
J = Rangoon Red
3 = Dark Red Metallic
(Two reds are better than one I suppose....)

R712 = LN700 diesel, 24,000 lbs GVWR

HB8
HB--I do not have upholstery information for this year
8 = In conjunction with the "H", Custom Cab without butterfly hood. Cab and chassis vehicle

Z = Clark model 397V five speed direct transmission

E1N
E1 = Eaton model 16244 two speed rear axle, 17,500 lbs capacity, 5.57 / 7.75 ratios
N = Ford 7,500 lb capacity front axle with power steering. (9,000 lb and 12,000 lb models also used this code but with your GVWR 7,500 is probably what's under there)

24000 = 24,000 lbs GVWR

87 = Body Company. This comes up for U-Haul or Fire truck sometimes. What's on the back of it?

No special order.

Truck used to have a water tank on the back from what I have been told. Strange that is says it had a Cummins, must have been swapped out. It has a CAT 3208 in it now. Also if I am not mistaken it also has an 8 speed but I will have to take another look. Thank you for your helpful information.

I'll double check the code.

OK I misread the engine code. "B" is the 3208.

The transmission code "Z" is the Clark 397V for that year. If you are thinking the red button on the stick is a splitter in the transmission, that's not it--it's the two speed rear axle.

Unless someone changed the transmission.
