I rebuilt the 10.25 Sterling axle in my 1995 F350. Looking for feedback if the gear pattern is good.
Specs:
Sterling 10.25
Original 4.10 gears re-used
All new bearings and races
new electronic locking Ford Diff
Measured runout of ring gear 0.002 inches
Backlash measured in 6 places: 0.01" to 0.013"
Pinion rotational resistance 22lb-in
Pictures are taken with preload applied to carrier bearings. Pictures show multiple locations on ring gear.
I replaced the carrier in my 10.25 recently (within a year ago) and I read somewhere along the way, that when it comes to setting up used gears, it more important to try and put them back where you found them, more than within ideal spec of absolutely middle where you'd want to setup new gears. I dunno how actual the info was, but had I known that before taking the old gears out, I would have read the pattern first haha. That said, when I put it back together, there was no noise and I read that if you get them setup without noise, then you did your job well.
