9th injector information

Has anyone looked into the ninth injector on the new trucks? Is it fed from the HP fuel system, or is more similar to the DEF injector?

I’m thinking it would be pretty neat to add a manually operated ninth injector that would keep auto regens from being required. When I pull even moderately heavy, and I have auto regen turned off, I’ll go 1500+ miles with dpf% on zero. If I could manually fire a regen off every couple hundred miles while unloaded, the ECM wouldn’t even need to be aware of what I was doing, keeping auto regens from dumping fuel during the exhaust stroke.

Anyone have any information or pictures of the setup on the new trucks?

I'd like to have the same feature on my '20 XLT, but mine normally triggers a regen at 500 miles irrespective of soot load percentage (provided the dash option to disable automatic regens isn't enabled). If that feature isn't available to disable auto regens (which it is on mine via ForScan, thankfully) I don't think ECM-initiated auto regens are easily avoidable, based simply on soot load percentage.

Provided one could come up with the apparatus for a 9th injector (and you permanently disabled auto-regens), if you triggered the flow to the injector manually I reckon you'd have manually turn off the flow to that injector while monitoring the soot load percentage and after it reached zero?

Just rolling the idea around in my head...

As long as we're throwing out ideas to see what sticks...

It's heat that cleans the DPF, right? So why not add some insulation around the outside of the DPF to keep the heat high inside it?

That’s a valid point. Header wrap would be ideal. I might need to give that a try

From the 2023 6.7 book "The heat needed for DPF regeneration is created by fuel injected by the Downstream Injector (DSI) just in front of the DEC. The DEC reduces the HC in the fuel resulting in an increase in exhaust temperatures so regeneration can occur." So you probably need a newer exhaust to get the DEC to get the higher temp, but injection before the DOC in pre 23 systems may function the same. Here is a picture of the 9th injector which is fed by the low pressure side of the fuel system.

^^^ There's a lot of acronyms in that post. I don't know what HC and DEC are.

Here you go Jim,

HC - hydrocarbon, i.e. fuel
DEC Diesel Exotherm Catalist, i.e. fuel burner

Thanks for the pic Strider, looks like a basic fuel injector, wish they would have done that years ago.

I've heard of a DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) but never a DEC. The DOC is exothermic by nature.

The info that I provided is directly from the 2023 Ford 6.7 manual. I would not be surprised if the DOC and DEC are the same thing. The newer version may have some design differences since it is having fuel sprayed directly into it vs burning off fuel mixed with exhaust during regen.

Damn technology! Buy something and after 6 months it's already old.

If one of these popular Ford aftermarket companies produced a kit I would be very interested in buying one.

Probably cost prohibitive though.

it would require pcm changes too, so i would highly doubt it. I will say 2 things on my 2024. First, you dont even know it's happening unless you have the diesel info screen up. In my 2016, you could feel a slight shudder when regen started. And second, the regen is like 5 or 10 minutes at most.

Dave, just sell the 2016 and get into a new one. You know you want too.... just make a few more arrests to get your commission up!!!
