Carburetor help
I removed the carburetor on my 4.9L V6 a realized there was a line that kind of led to nowhere (second photo).
the truck is not running yet and I’m giving a shot rebuilding the carburetor myself. I’ve looked at videos and the vacuum line is always a rubber hose. If it is the vacuum like where is it supposed to connect?
I am going to guess you truck is a 83 to 86 as that looks like a feedback carb.
Being a feedback carb it will not have a vacuum port for the dist. vacuum advance.
You can check the dist. and if it does not have a vacuum can for advance it is also a feedback part.
The last 2 pictures are for the choke.
That orange hose should go to a tube, like in your hand, on the exh. manifold that is clean fresh air to be heated for the choke.
There should be a 2nd tube like in your hand coming from the exh. manifold up to the choke housing you are pointing to. That is the hot air side to heat the choke.
One of the tubes goes in the bottom and the other out the top of the exh. manifold.
You should also have a wire from the ALT. "S" stud going to the black choke housing, it works with the hot air set up and both need to be working to have the choke work right.
Dorman makes a kit to repair where the tubes go into the exh manifold. If you need more tubing than when comes in the kit hit the local hardware store and get copper tubing of the right size dia. and use that you dont need to use steel.
Now if you dont have smog and need to replace the carb DO NOT replace with feedback one get one for a 82 or older truck.
Most / I get a knock off from Ebay and also get a knock off HEI that fits the 300 motor, also off Ebay, and change the motor over to non-feedback where you can make adjustments as the feedback uses a computer to adjust the carb & timing.

Hi Dave,
I will probably just change the carb to a non-feedback.
is there anything I should know before doing so?
Or is it pretty straightforward? Are there any other parts I need to replace or delete besides the HEI? Thanks for the help!
It may not have the bowl vent, the other hose nipple in your first picture next to the filter (your pointing to the filter) that should not be a big deal as my Ebay carb also did not have it.
You do not need to replace the dist. right away if all you need is a carb to get the truck running and dont have the money right then.
Because the timing is controlled by a computer and some of the sensors are on the carb that you no longer have installed the timing is locked.
Because the timing is locked you dont have all the power the motor can put out and that is why you would want to swap out the dist. but is not needed right away if you cant swing it.
If you have a junk yard that has Fords from say 78 to 83 with the DSII IGN system you can get the wiring and ICM from it, if it has a 300 six with a vacuum advance on it you can get it too.
Other wise you can get a dist. for say a 1981 300 six and everything will drop right in and plug up like factory.
We say go HEI as finding factory parts is getting hard to come by now days.
As for the HEI as long as it is for a Ford 240 / 300 six you should be good.
You will need a set of plug wires to fit the HEI as I dont think the wires you have now will fit the HEI dist. cap. I think a set of wires for 1987 Chevy with a 250 six should work.
Now dont go pulling all the wiring from the feedback system out till you get the truck running again with the new carb and dist.
I believe you use the hot wire to your old coil, the HEI has the coil built in, to power the HEI and once you have the timing and carb adjusted you can start to pull the feedback wiring and solenoids out.
When you get to that part we can walk you thru it it is not hard and think only 1 or 2 wires need to be cut.
Again we are here to help walk you thru it.
