If anybody is on the fence about picking up a KC turbo, just do it!
I just put a Jetfire stage 1 11 blade on my pickup and with the Gear head SRL++ tune it is downright rowdy. It spools quickly, easily makes 30+psi and the EGTs dropped by 200 degrees.
I replaced the factory style with a billet wheel with this new one. The old one was getting sticky and not responding as quickly as it should.
The whistle is fantastic but not over the top. There's an intoxicating whistle at 15-17 psi of exhaust back pressure.
You shouldn't need to have your tunes adjusted or updated. That was one of my big concerns as I like the tuning I had.
You won't regret spending the money! I almost wish I had gone with a stage 1.5. This stage 1 cleans up the tune and it isn't hazy when you take off like it used to be. Just a quick puff of smoke and then turbo lights off and hauls ***!
My KC stageII has been flawless and I love it....best thing I ever did!
In regards to tuning.
I know they weren't to regulated until recently. 10 yrs ago (last update 5 yrs ago) mine were written as I requested....I will leave it at that. If one was to "update" an old tune would the tuner be required to re-write the tune and include all the regulated parameters?
I experienced one weird thing a few times which I posted on another thread. After that few times it went away.
I think it is time to yank it and clean it after 10 yrs.....but damn I hate pulling it
Such a PITA with the BPD oil ines that take that extra 1/2" of room you need to fish it out. Ok I am done crying.
Seems like the KC stage 1 is the way to go for towing. I am curious about running one with the stock strategy and no tune. Will it throw a CEL? My guess it would. Maybe just swap with the stock turbo every 2 years?
Out here in Cowlaforn-ya as well, asking for a friend.
No need to swap anything other than the tune back to OEM stock. I smogged my truck several times with a STAGE II and OEM strategy before I registered in a free state.
The truck will run just fine without tuning, but to take advantage of the unit custom tuning is recommended.
My 2004 never threw a CEL and not sure why a replacement turbo would.
Truck has a sneaky delete so the turbo has to come off to swap that out anyways. Wasn't sure on the CEL, since the KC spools up differently I was thinking the stock strategy might get an "overboost" code although now that I think about it I've seen that before and it was just a wrench light not CEL. Good to know. Just recently cleaned the original turbo pushing 200k. Unison ring was "frozen" and got replaced plus there was a decent amount of pitting where the vanes ride. Seems to be working ok for now, just making plans for down the road

KC Stage 1 in my 2003 Ex didn't set any codes. Stock PCM with Atlas 40. 2007 pickup with Atlas 40 + Canned SCT no codes either.
I agree the turbos are nice, that's why I have two F250 has pulled 15k up a decent grade in 100+* temps and ran like a champ.
