I’m looking at a used 4x4 either a 5.0 or the smaller eco boost. Living at high altitude but not planning on towing more than a modest pop-up camper. Previously owned 5.0 and wasn’t impressed with the fuel economy but not sure if the baby boost motor is a good choice as I consider total cost of ownership.

Something to keep in mind, the smaller ecoboost is nothing close to eco, it's a twin turbo V6 and where you force extra air into an engine, you must also add in extra fuel to mix with it.

5.0 and a custom tune will get you the best results. and yes will be much better on fuel keeping in mind it is a 7000lb brick you're pushing against the wind so no matter what, you're not going to get good economy, it's a truck not a Prius.

Makes sense. When the 3.5 came out there didn’t seem to be a drastic fuel advantage compared to the 5.0. Wasn’t sure if that 2.7 was noticeably better or in that realm of “too small to be efficient”.

Personally I'd go with the 5.0 bc it's not actually that much worse as far as fuel mileage. Just my humble opinion.
