Whichever one of these engines that you own, do you wish you would have gotten the other.
Am considering a new truck, and would like some opinions. I tow a fish and ski deck boat, and a loaded across the bed tool box. Other than that, it runs empty the rest of the time.
I have the 5.0 and no troubles out of the motor. The safety guy at work has a truck identical to mine, but with the Eco, pretty impressive little motor. His has been in the shop for that intercooler problem for the past 2 months. Apparently the dealership is having trouble getting the updated parts. Not that the issue itself is bothering me but the time to get the stuff to fix it really puts me off.

Thanx
i think you'll find that people's opinion is exactly the opposite.
everyone seems to be happy with whichever engine they have.
mileage is close between the two. the ecoboost is rated to tow more, but the 5.0 is no slouch.
honestly, at this point, reading the MANY reviews available on this site, i'd base my decision on the trim level and options wanted, then whichever engine you get will great.
Either motor will tow your boat fine. Gas mileage is comparable between the two. The deciding factor will probably be something other than those two factors. When I bought my 2013 two months ago, I thought I was set on getting the EB. I went with the 5.0 and couldn't be happier. I don't tow and like the V8 better.
I have the 5.0 and love it. Just rolled over 30k miles. I haven't towed anything bigger than an 18ft lowboy with furniture but it pulled that like it wasn't there. I can't really speak on mileage because its not stock anymore. I have 3.55s and it turns the 35s with ease. My brother has 37s in his 5.0 and it still moves. I have friends with ecos. Some love them, others say they have noticeable turbo lag.
The ecoboosts are definately a powerful engine but so is the 5.0. I have had the luxury of driving both when they come off the truck at work and they are both equally impressive. The only thing i have noticed is the ecoboosts fuel economy seems to drop around 35,000 miles.
I expected ww3 when I opened this thread but as Meboarder said generally most people seem happy with what they have for me ecoboost all the way and will tell anyone to go with it but for every time I say ecoboost a 5.0 guy will say go 5.0.
I test drove both and I can honestly say they both drive very well. The 5.0 has a nice rumble to it..and the ecoboost is quiet and scoots quite well. The day I get mine it will have the ecoboost due to the low end torque for towing.
I'm going on a hunch by saying that the 2011 and 2012 ecoboost trucks were Ford's teething years for these engines much like 2009 and 2010 were trouble years for the six speed tranny.
The best thing to do is to drive them both and make a choice. Either is great and guaranteed to put a big smile on your face.
I have the 5.0L with 3.55 gears, 19K miles since new. I've had a few minor issues but not with the 5.0L motor. Truck needed a new driveshaft due to slip-yoke thunk, slop, then had to have passenger side shock strut replaced because it cracked mysteriously, then HAVC fan speed resistor died. All fixed under warranty.
I think If I could do it again, while I love my 5.0L if I had a blank check I would probably go for a new Lariat Limited with a 6.2 V8 I would have been one of those guys that would have sprung for the 6.2 had it been availible in the, XL or XLT trims.
My grass is greener note is wishing I had gotten the nav package just go for it and use an ipad screen stick on cover if you're worried about it getting dirty like I was(wish i would have thought of this) and still not sure if I did it again would i go bench vs center console
This is the one of the most discussed topics on this forum. If you accept that performance and mileage is very close, then in my opinion, the decision comes down to potential. Do you want an engine that is factory built to it's maximum performance or one that has lots of room for modification?

Exactly that's why I went with a twin turbo low psi and detuned motor. Just a tuner and it makes another 50hp and 108ft/lbs tq and still isn't pushed to its limit or in any danger of failure but that's just because the 3.5 shares some design with the 6.7 diesel.
