Are the cowl control assembly, arm, etc for a 1956 F100 the same as a 1953-55 F100?
When my 1954 F100 truck was last painted they sealed the cowl vent door with bon-do and took out the control assembly and arm. I cannot seem to find them on the inter web for 53-55, but plenty for the 56.
When I get my paint done I would like the vent back and functioning.
There is an electrical assembly for the 1953-55 but a little on the high side for what I want.
The cowl vent on my 56 had been converted to electric operation when I got it which I really like altho I had to redo the linkage so it didn't bind and stall out at the end of travel and I changed the switch to one that matched the other ones in my console. I don't know what is the price of the conversion kit today, but it's really a pretty simple set up that should be easy enough to fab out a 12 V reversible motor out of the salvage yard (electric window motor?) a simple bit of linkage fabrication and a passenger or back seat single window switch, shouldn't cost more than 20.00 at an expensive salvage yard. You don't need any fancy limit switches etc., just let go of the button when it's fully open or closed. Now the aftermarket conversion kits may be expensive for the pre 56 models if you haven't converted to 12V.
Before you open yours up, take a look under the dash and make sure whoever sealed it up left the screen etc. attached to the vent door, those things are $$$! The new rubber seal gasket is a bear to install. I put mine in a pan of boiling water for a couple minutes to soften it.
Thanks, the boiling water for the seal sound like a great idea. I was able to find a door, linkage, and handle from another member here. Traded him a case of beer and some shrimp etouffee. I am just thinking about what the body guy is going to charge me to get the old one out and the area ready for the new one. If there was a reason they sealed it up other than cosmetic.... Either way I think it there are cool and want it back!
Following....My cowl vent is also sealed. I am interested in the power opener for it. I like to tip of putting the gasket in hot water especially since I read that new gaskets are a pain to install.
