4.0 6 cyl with 120k miles. seems to stutter at times when just starting.
i am thinking tune up as i think its all factory-
any special kits or parts? plugs/wires?
I'm not sure what you mean by "stutter at times when just starting" but if you're thinking a misfire, then spark plugs, wires (if you have them versus CoP), fuel filter, air filter, check the health of the battery, I don't recall if the V6 has a MAF sensor, but if so, clean the MAF and IAT elements. While the spark plugs are out, make sure none are coated in oil due to leaking plug well seals. I guess it's been too long since I've worked on one of these. I don't recall if they have a discrete fuel filter behind the driver's front wheel well liner or if the only one is located in the fuel tank as part of the fuel pump assembly. Inspect all the vacuum and PCV hoses that you can see and listen for vacuum leaks when the engine is idling.
It wouldn't effect the engine when starting, but it would also be a good time to check the tire pressure for all your tires as well.
I got an '05 Explorer with the 4.0. My kid has an Explorer with the 4.6.
Anyway, a couple of years ago, I purchased my '05 and it had about 95K miles on it. I replaced the factory plugs with six new ones and I noted that the gaps were somewhat wide. Getting all new plugs from a RockAuto closeout, I think it has 4 Motorcrafts and 2 Denso plugs.
It's a fairly easy vehicle to change spark plugs.
