Tfi module differences
I have a few parts trucks kicking around. One is a 300 6 cylinder, two are 351s of about the same year 93-95) and one is an 87 with a 302 in it.
I have done some searching and haven't found a definite answer. Are these interchangeable at all, or at least enough I could swap one to see if that is an issue?

Because a cheap black one if youre having issues woudl help determine
BUT the color isnt consistent on all. For example, delphi makes a black and grey one but they are both in grey cases
Only the ones that have an "ignition diagnostic monitor" programmed into their processors need the black module
The 4.9 6 pop did not have that diagnostic monitor IIRR, maybe in 1995 and 1996
Simply swap modules and see if a code 212 pops up, that'll tell you if you have the monitor or not, and whether you need the black DY1077 ignition module or not
1993 and earlier trucks use the gray colored Push-Start style Ignition Control Module. There are two different versions.
One is distributor mounted
Motorcraft - DY1074 (supercedes DY425)
Ford - 5U2J-12A297-AA, 5U2Z-12A297-A
Wells - F121
Niehoff - FF409
BWD - CBE24
Standard - LX218
NapaEchlin - TP31
Delphi - DS10051
Transpo - FM425
MSD - 83648 (Made by Transpo above)
The other is a remote mount Push-Start ICM
Motorcraft - DY1075 (supercedes DY533)
Ford - 5U2Z12A297B (supercedes E
Z-12A297-A)Wells - F125
Niehoff - FF411
BWD - CBE33
Standard - LX226
NapaEchlin - TP33
Delphi - DS10053
Transpo - FM533
1994 and later trucks use a remote mount CCD-style ICM
Motorcraft - DY1077 (supercedes DY679, DY667, DY645)
Ford - 5U2Z-12A297-D (supercedes F1PZ-12A297-A)
Wells - F139
Niehoff - FF413
BWD - CBE40
Standard - LX-241
NapaEchlin - TP29
Delphi - DS10056
Transpo - FM544
This is discussed at length on this forum pretty much every week. Ford's documentation for the most part have the part numbers/descriptions reversed for the actual application. The aftermarket copied their info so most have the same issue. The above is correct and has been verified dozens of times.
I am getting a code 212, i did buy the truck used from someone else who swapped a whole ton of things on the truck to try and fix the issue. I did start reading about the tfi modules, but I find they get pretty confusing when it comes to swapping, and I read a lot of conflicting info about the black vs grey in certain years, etc.
I will likely try to swap one or two out and see what happens. Thank you for all of the help! I'm guessing I will be making another post in the future regarding this pesky 212 code though haha.
