Can't fix stupid

Took me a minute to realize this isn't how you pull an old brake hub. Other side came off easily enough, this one is a bear. Been using heat and penetrant fluids... any other ideas? A puller that works for these?

Thanks

Use a brake spoon to release the shoes and it will come off.

Sheei.. and you already tapped around with a ball peen to try to brake it loose? Worst case scenario I've only seen once required the angle grinder and cutting the drum. The ball peen hammer has always worked for me.

Does it move or rack back and forth at all or totally rock solid on there....

If not movement at all the drum may be seized to the hub. If that is the case lots of penetrating oil over several days.....a combination of 50% acetone and 50% transmission fluid is said to the the most effective penetrant and rust reliever. After 2 days or so then hit it with torch again and hit the face of the drum.

Have you climbed on your back and looked from behind to see if you have a significant "rust ring" holding it on? As a suggested a above a hammer on the edge where the rust is holding it on both from the sides and the back. you may even be able to slide a small screwdriver in from the back side all around and lightly tap it to break the rust free....

Most likely a case of persistence and persuasion over several days...

That hole might be threaded for a bolt. Might be able to push it off with a ratchet.

Take your ball peen hammer and smack the drum face in between the lug studs, where the drum and axle shaft flange interfaces. That should break the drum free from the flange if they're rusted together. I'd try to avoid heat if at all possible unless you plan on replacing the drum. But whether you use heat or penetrant fluid to assist, the smacking with the hammer will be most effective.

Ok, thanks for the replies. I'll keep at it with the penetrants and tapping. Thank you!

If you have an air chisel with a peening head that will also zap that rotor right off of there.

You'll probably need more than a tapping. A 2 or 3 pound sledge will be good, too, if you have one that fits between the studs. Smack it good and hard. You won't hurt it, unless you miss and hit the studs. A couple good, hard smacks and the drum should pop right off. It doesn't look that rusty.

Success. A good overnight soak and some heat and light tap this morning popped right off. Yay

An Estwing masonry hammer…….I’d love to say that’s the first time I’ve seen one used for mechanic work, but I use mine for everything.

Based on the “green” handle, I would say that’s an old one.

Love my estwings, especially for durability. But after 20+ years doing masonry, my preferred masons hammer is a wooden handled Vaughn.

They also function well in the garage. Lol
