Hey all,
Here's one for you to mull over.
I've got the premium stereo with casette/Cd in-dash, in my '99 F-350.
The other day the lights in the display were out. They came back on but the next day they were out again and haven't returned since. The radio and Cd work just fine. Any ideas out there? Nothing close when I did a search. Bob
Sounds like the LED board is fried. Not worth the $$ to fix IMO. Best to
replace the head unit with a nice aftermarket unit, like Alpine,
Eclipse, Pioneer, <insert your fav. brand here...>.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Dec-02 AT 07:21 AM (EST)] Thanks for the info.
I'm sure the wife will prefer that I use the "force" over the use of the wallet to fix this problem .
There's a shop in town that does r&r on radio gear or I'll check into the boneyard option.
Thanks again for the quick replies.
Mine has done the samne thing now for about a year and a half. When i took it over to an electrnics shop to have an alarm, fog and driving lights installed two months ago I mentioned my radio problem and was thing about upgrading it later. The owner said he was famaliar w/ this radio in that the LED display needed more than 12 watts to light up and after doing some conversions in the unit a soldering point gets disconnected...you know what I mean. Anyways since I was doing so much work there he offerred to fix it. I said first things first since its not what i was working on right now anyways. But later definately. So then a few days later he says he found the notes (file) he had made to correct the problem for this radio and was eager to do it. I think he wanted something like $20 dollars to fix it. This guy is good AND affordable. Well I'm going over there at lunch to ask him about it. Will try to leave the radio for hime to work on later at nite. I don't think it will take but a day or two to get it back. Will let you know.
Ok. Taking the truck over after lunch. Said he would probably be able to get to it today since he has just one other appointment scheduled for this afternoon. Wanted to try and drop off the unit but he said he needed the truck there to test it when done. Don't like leaving my truck just anywhere. Commented on other FTE's having this problem and he didn't see why another shop couldn't do the same thing. Anyway's wiil post tonite if I get it back after work.
Damn! That was more expemsive than I thought. But it usually does. I might have gone a little longer using the force! Well got the display fixed and cleaned the eye. Said if anybody needed help w their display let me know and I can get you his e-mail address. So if you know your way around stereo's and soldering he's really helpful. Put a voltage meter on my headlights too. Only 10.8 on the low beam and 10.6 on the high beam. The battery metered 12.2 so I made an appointment to get the relays and heavy gauge wire coming off the battery. It was the brighter, brights, whiter, whites tech article. Might as well take full advantage of these PIAA Xtreme White bulbs I just put in. Got a nice blue tint to them. As in Big Blue!
This electronics shop where I live. He said this is the second Ford stereo he has fixed like this. The other i think he said was from a 1995 model truck.
Although I can
>go to Best Buy I like to keep things origonal.
I don't know if this will work on your stereo. It might. You'd have to do some soldering.
I can't believe that! This electronics guy is really helpful. If anybody needs help I told him about this great site and he didn't mind me giving out his e-mail for any assistance. I thought I'd ask him if it'll be ok since he lists it in the yellow pages anyways in his advertisement.
