Hello all, i’ve been reading thread after thread with similar issues over the past couple days, however nothing has lined up exactly with what im experiencing with my 1997 F250 7.3 E4OD.
Just had PSOM repaired due to an intermittent limp mode condition. Truck would shift beautiful, other than when in limp mode, before removing the PSOM. Sent the module out, and the truck sat for a few weeks while it was repaired. Installed back in the truck, and now the transmission is stuck in high gear.
Forscan tests come back good. I have checked my work with cluster install, good. All brake lights working. I have power at the solenoid pack connector at 1 and 12 with KOEO. When put into drive, no other pins are hot.
I am getting a bit stumped as electrical is not my strong suit, and user threads with similar issues found a simple unplugged connector, or the thread died after getting close to what I'm experiencing.
Thank you in advance for any guidance on what to do next!
Does your rear diff have the LSD in it? Look at the diff tag to see if there's an "L" on it. If so, clutches could be shot filling the bottom of diff with metal shavings which ride up the tone ring to the VSS.
My 96 OBS had this problem with metal filings causing VSS problems until diff was opened up & cleaned out.
Yes I have, thank you. This does not line up with my symptoms. The truck is stuck in 4th. PSOM is reflecting accurate speed. I will double check the VSS for S&G. Thanks

Thanks for your insight. My speedo reflects accurately, so the input from the diff should be OK.
Starting in 4th gear is caused by a lack of power to the trans. You should have a working reverse and 2nd gear, in both the manual 1 and 2 positions. You need to find out why power isn't getting to the trans, or test the solenoid pack to see if it has failed, since you claim to have power at the solenoid connector.
Buy a CD to Ford's Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual for the 1996 Model year.
It illustrates transmission control wiring for E4OD transmission, which would help you trace circuitry to and through the solenoids.
