2023 Expedition Engine Cover

I picked up a used 2023 Expedition Limited that did not have an engine cover. Looked naked. Searched online and found one with Part# ML3Z-6A949-A. Found one on eBay and bought it. It is a rigid foam cover with plastic internal frame. Looks better, but not what I was expecting.
Ford dealer parts counter said that an updated part# is MR7Z-6A949-A. Pics of that part showed a cover that might fit, but they all said "Raptor" on the front of the cover. So I stayed with the original part number.

Yeah, Ford stopped producing the old style and all the new ones say Raptor and Ford Performance logos on them.

I just purchased at used '22 Max and it doesn't have the engine cover. What does it really do and should I find one and install it?

They are just there to quiet down the noise from the direct injection fuel injection. They must have been able pass drive by noise standards without it, and people apparently aren’t complaining about the engine noises, so they stopped making them.
