Today as I started my truck, 2003 F250 CCSB 7.3l, I noticed a noise that sounds like starter is still engaged while truck is running. I have attached a video so if any one has experience or opinions chime in. Sounds like starter solenoid is engaged to me. iCloud link to video
Thanks,
Steven
Manual or auto transmission? I don't think it's the starter, at least it doesn't sound like any I've heard before. If it is though a firm pop with a hammer should free it. Not hard just firm, not trying to break it off just wake it up. I'm thinking it's either the flexplate has come apart(if auto) or possibly the clutch pilot bearing is going out(if manual).
Auto. Just made sure all bolts on starter were tight and started it again. Same noise. Turned truck off and starter kept turning engine over with key out and in hand. Had to pull battery cables. Another reason I’m thinking starter.
in the above video u can here as I shut truck off it sounded like starter was trying to keep turning truck over for split second.
Took this solenoid jumper and touched to battery positive and it started turning engine over as it should. When I took it off engine continued to turn over with no key in ignition. Had to pull battery cables again.
also tested current through solenoid. Zero volts with key off. Had wife start truck while I was under with voltmeter on solenoid and ground. Voltage of 8.5-9v truck started and after 3 seconds she turned truck off. Truck quit running but voltage to solenoid continued at 8.5 and starter continued to turn over engine.
im at a loss on what else to check.
I’ve read other instances of this occurring but can’t remember the cause. Water intrusion to the VSM maybe??? @SkySkiJason would probably know but I haven’t seen him around the forum in a while.
How about the ignition switch itself? Or did you rule that out (bypass it) with your jumper test?
If the voltage on the output side of the solenoid went to zero, but the starter drive stayed engaged, you probably need to pull the starter and have it inspected for contamination/damage in the drive or maybe even replace it.
Ordered starter last night. I’ve checked everything else. I’m assuming the “switch” in the solenoid gets stuck on. Hopefully that fixes it. Thanks for input guys.
I would have to go with solenoid. High amperage solenoids don't like when batteries get low, it causes arcing of the contacts eventually causing them to stick. The older style fender mounted solenoids were bad to stay engaged. You learn fast about jumping off an older Ford truck with a manual transmission as you hook the cables to the battery and the truck lurches forward if it's in gear.

The drive is hanging for some reason. The solenoid engages the drive, but the engine running should cause it to retract. It could be the solenoid causing it, but it usually isn't.
