Under Hood Lights

So, these trucks don't come from Ford with under hood lighting anymore, I found these lights on amazon, fairly easy installation.
They have a switch that shuts them off when you close the hood.
Now, it was getting dark so this was just a quickie job I did hooking them up, will clean the wire routing up later.
Mounted the close switch on the fender next to the front most adjustable bumper, there is an existing hole there.
I used flat washers top and bottom of the switch because the existing square hole is too big to make the switch tight.
I also found out the fender is not a great ground, the switch didn't want to work, so I added a wire from the switch mounting point to the negative battery post.
I ran the positive wire directly to the positive battery post.
The lights are strip LED's with double side tape, I mounted them to the underside of the hood structural surfaces just behind where the rubber seals contact the hood.
Anyway, the lights work pretty well, although I have rarely needed lights like these, but nice to have I guess.
Now, these are one of those amazon items that I got for free, for which I will post a review, so I won't post a link, makes zero difference to me if you buy these or not, just thought someone might like them.

I'm lucky in that on mine it does have an underhood light, but it's woefully underpowered, and puts out a minimum of light.

However, since there's already a light present I can repurpose the harness and run a few LED strips (not to exceed the current of the OEM circuit, obviously). I'll take a look at the ones you used, see if I can't derive the current draw.

Does anyone happen to know what that OEM light draws, by chance?

The light looks good, but I just keep a USB-rechargeable headlamp in the cubby under the radio. Works under the hood and has the added benefit of working in the toolbox and for tire changing too.

LED light strip draws minimal current, you could run quite a bit more than those in this kit without going over what a standard incandescent light draws.

I don’t prefer lights on the underside of the hood. They cast too many shadows, are generally weak, and you may be blocking the light depending on what you need to see. I always carry a flashlight in my pocket so that works out the best for me if I need to look into a dark engine bay.

My 1994 Silverado came with this retractable magnetic under hood light. It would light up the engine bay or you could pull it out and stick it to the side of the truck when changing a tire or for whatever.

Ha! That reminded me of this one. I think it came out from under the hood of my Dad's '83 F-100. It was a XLT Ranger package if memory serves. It's self retracting and I think may have a mercury switch inside to turn it on when you open the hood. I'm afraid it would burst into flames if I tried powering it up to test now though.

I have seen that kit floating around on amazon, keep toying with getting it. I have the OEM light but it is underwhelming at best.

I threw a small LED strip on my toolbox to fix the light in place.
